Short Leg Toddler - Anyone Else??

froufrou · 27/10/2008 21:57

I have a DS who is 23 months old. He is the sparkiest little boy I know but he has such short legs!! Nearly 2 and still in 12-18 month trousers? The 18-24 month trousers look huge with so much material and long legs. I look at other children and they seem so long legged in comparison.
I just hope he is normal and will grow soon....

My DD is 2.4. She is just below the 50th centile for height and weight.

Last week I put her 6-12 month trousers in the loft - but only because they were getting tight round the waist! Still fit her legs!

She doesn't look out of proportion (although maybe I am comparing her to me who also has short legs and a long body.)

Different brands are so different in the measurements though. If you are desperate to have him in the "right age" clothes then Gap seems to suit short-arse children!

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 27/10/2008 22:17

DD has really short legs, gets it from me. When she grows out of trousers the legs are still too long for her. DSD had quite short legs as a toddler though, but at 4 she's got quite long ones so I'm hoping DD's will grow. Think I'm going to have to get sewing!

christywhisty · 27/10/2008 23:11

Both my DC's trouser size was at least a year smaller than their top size.

Twinklemegan · 27/10/2008 23:21

I think most manufacturers make trousers for toddlers on stilts.

SmugColditz · 27/10/2008 23:24

both my sons have always been in a size smaller for trousers than tops. My dad has a 29 inch leg though, at 5'10". It's quite a normal male shape. Women (and girls) do have proportionately longer legs and shorter bodies but manufacturers rarely allow for this.

Plus if you shop in Woolies, their clothes are hugely long in the leg IMHO.

irma2010 · 15/03/2010 07:08

Hello to all

I have the same problem here, Though I don't know if it is a problem. My boy is wearing size 1 for tops and size 00 for trousers.
I am quite concerned. But can't find anything proper to read about it. Any suggestions?
Irma

heth1980 · 15/03/2010 07:48

Same problem here too........my DD has just turned 2 and is only just out-growing her 12-18 month trousers. She's in age 2-3 tops and they're getting too short. DH has a long body and short legs though so I just assumed it was genetic!

Nettiespagetti · 15/03/2010 08:03

Yes same prob dd 17 m just grown out of 6-9m trousers only because they don't fit inthe bum but is wearing 18-24 tops!

No waist and really shortlegs!!

mrsflux · 15/03/2010 08:57

snap!
i have tiddly legs so just assumed it was from my side of the family. we just roll the legs up.

tabbycat7 · 15/03/2010 15:36

DS2 is 2.4 and is in 2-3 tops, or even 3-4 (might have shrunk in the wash plus I quit ironing but is only just now outgrowing 12-18 mo trousers. DS1 was the same. They're built like their dad

lizziemun · 15/03/2010 16:03

I have one of each. DD1 is 6yrs but I have to get trouser for 8yrs for her. And dd2 is 2.6yrs and is only just growing into 2/3yrs trousers

chuckeyegg · 15/03/2010 16:07

DS had really short legs for a long time he is 3 now and they've really grown I thinks it's common at 2. I think the manufacturers have got the measurements all wrong!

Hildabeast · 15/03/2010 17:20

This made me chuckle because my DH always teased me about my concern for my DD's legs! She always had huge turn-ups and I was convinced there was a problem. I do agree that sizes vary though, some manufacturers make for supermodel legs. I am short bodied and long legged and my DH is normal but tall(?) so where did she get it?
She reached about 3 and a half and gradually realised that trousers were fitting better, the other day she was in a four year old and it fitted her! She is four in a week. Maybe some just start that way.

NightLark · 15/03/2010 17:29

DS had tiny short legs as a baby and toddler - trousers always needed huge turn ups and there was no way he could wear an all-in-one rain suit, the body would be straining on him and the legs trailing on the floor.

He's grown out of it at 4. His legs are in proportion to the rest of his lanky body now!

Ewe · 15/03/2010 17:32

My DD is the same, she is 2 tomorrow and still in 9-12month jeans. She is small on top too.

They come in all shapes and sizes!

suiledonne · 15/03/2010 17:36

Both my dds are like this - they get it from DH's side of the family - short legs, long body.

DD1 is almost 4. She wears a 4-5 on top but still a 2-3 trousers and even some of those are a little on the long side.

Bought some 12-18 month trousers for dd2 in M&S recently. She is 16 months and they are huge on her.

Bibmother · 15/03/2010 19:45

I think they get bigger as they older as my DS seemed to be in 12-18m and 18-24m trousers for ages but now at (just)4 he's in 3-4yr trousers and looking like he's beginning to grow out of those. He's very slightly smaller than average but his legs do look like they've begun to catch up with the rest of him, so don't worry, they don't stay short legged for ever!

hmmSleep · 15/03/2010 19:57

yep, my 2.5 yr old has tiny little legs, the effort the little man has to put in climbing stairs! Depends on the shop, but in M&S he's only just grown out of 9-12 month trousers! But then I do think M&S clothes are made for giants. I agree with wuglet, gap seem to fit best, although even there I have to go down a size. How tall are you and his dad? Do either of you have short legs. Both dh and I are pretty short, and my Dad has very short legs, he's one of these people that looks average height when sat down, then he stands up and people go I blame him .

suwoo · 15/03/2010 20:39

My DS1 has just started school at 3.3 and is quite tiny. The smallest pants I could get (at short notice) are 3-4 and are enormous! The waist is pulled to the max and I had to cut about 6cm off the length.

Him and his brother can wear the same clothes. His brother is 7 months

DD was the same. We were at a wedding when DS1 was 18moths and wearing 9-12 long style linen shorts. DH got them both changed and put the shorts on DD. She was 6

thisisyesterday · 15/03/2010 20:41

froufrou my ds2 is exactly the same!
he is actually no different to most other children his age in height, but he has a long body and short legs.

my dad is the same, so i guess he's inherited it from him, poor little love! lol

specialsmasher · 15/03/2010 20:45

I think it's a problem with the blinking trousers! They all seem ridiculously long to me - I have to take INCHES off, every time we buy some.

Surely it's the trousers? Gawd, I do hope so.

thisisyesterday · 15/03/2010 20:50

nah it isn't the trousers. ds1 and ds3 are both fine in the "right" age trousers, it's just my ds2 who needs tiny ones.

he is 2.5yrs and I am handing his trousers striaght down to ds3 who is 9 months! lol

mejon · 15/03/2010 21:19

The most recent pair of trousers I bought for DD (3.7) were 12-18 month velvet ones from the sale in Matalan. They fit perfectly in the leg. She also occasionally still wears some 9-12 month fleece joggers from Mothercare which are only now getting to be just above ankle length. Fine with a pair of wellies! Last summer she was wearing a pair of cropped jeans I got from Tesco in age 6-12 months - they are huge around the middle/bottom with an adjustable waist so I would imagine they'll be worn again this summer albeit at pedal-pusher/long shorts length!

taffetacat · 15/03/2010 21:32

My DS had short legs in proportion to the rest of his body until he was 5. They have elongated in the last year and he now is in age appropriate trousers and looks more proportioned.

DD (3.5) isn't exactly long limbed but its not as obvious with her. I have shortish legs and DH has long ones so am hoping she has inherited his ( well obv not the hairy muscly bit or his poky out veins.eww. ).

CokeFan · 15/03/2010 21:54

DD (18 months) has this problem too - we had some success with M&S jeans that fold up and fasten with a button - otherwise we just put her in dresses with tights on to avoid the whole issue . I was thinking it was a bit weird because I've got really long legs and a short body and short arms. It's good to know that some of them sort their proportions out later!

Some of DD's tops seem to have sleeves made for orangutans too.
