Shopping trips!

I'm wondering if there are any other parents out there with a very inpatient 1 year old when it comes to shopping trips?

Every time I go to the supermarket or on a shopping trip it's a nightmare. If I stop to look at anything for longer than 10 seconds she starts wailing!!! Its really starting to get me down I can't go shopping with friends as I find my Daughter's behaviour really frustrating and embarrassing - what is going wrong!?!?! I've tried giving her a favourite toy, drink, dummy, but nothing works. If we are always on the go then she is fine - its just when we stop - how strange does this sound?!?!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds very normal indeed to me!

It is totally normal. I don't take ds shopping and haven't done so since he was very small and was permenantly asleep. Your dd is B-O-R-E-D! and probably quiet a bright wee thing.

Have you tried giving her shopping things to hold? Obviously not eggs or glass jars of jam, but things like bags of raisins

Very normal! My ds is 14 months and just as you describe. Wants to reach everything on the shelves, get out the trolley seat and walk but then wants to go up to everything and empty shelves so cries when I take him away from things. I just keep talking to him and pointing things out to him. He's at his worst when we get stuck in a cue and have to stop and pay for things at the check out. I think your dd is just clever and wants to explore. I know it's frustrating and embarrassing for you but she'll grow out of it eventually. I see loads of babies kicking of at Tesco all the time so I assume it's fairly normal!

Yes, my DD is exactly the same. I tend to avoid taking her on shopping trips. If she has to come with me I try and time the trip with her nap time so she'll sleep.

If desperate I rock the buggy backwards and forwards so even though I've stopped to look at something, the buggy is still moving.

Or give her something nice to eat.

Or give her something very exciting to play with like my mobile phone (which she's not normally allowed to play with!).

Thank you for your replies - it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one out there!!

I will certainly be trying out some of your suggestions.

Thanks again

and perseverance too!

My dd was exactly like yours but now she is wonderful (mostly). I think that timing is important too - not hungry / not tired.

I'm afraid that I haven't subscribed to shopping while she is sleeping... I prefer to have my feet up at home.
