Dear All,
Any top tips for getting my 3 week old to sleep independently in his moses basket...he cries when he's put down unless he's out for the count! And cries when he wakes up!

live through the next few weeks by using a sling and letting him sleep on you or only putting him down when he's asleep.. pick him up as soon he wakes

he'll change by 6 - 8 weeks

he's just new to the world and a little confused and scared

suwoo · 15/10/2008 15:48

Mine still does both of those things and he's nearly 2 . Enjoy him and don't worry about it- yet.

Completely agree with Twiglett, my DD slept on or with us for the first 8 weeks and although I found it hard going at the time, I'm glad now that she is 2.3 that I had that closeness with her. Failing that you could always try swaddling.

Yep, agree that it is still early days. 6 weeks or so is more realistic and will not set up "bad" habits. I speak as a Mum of a 2 yr old who sleeps alone fine and has done despite getting cuddled to sleep for the first few months.
Don't worry!

aw, I remember that newborn stage so well
I used a dummy to get him off in the moses basket when my breasts just couldn't cope with the constant sucking anymore
I used to walk him loads in the day in the pushchair and then carry the pushchair into the kitchen, or leave it in the garden while he slept to get 5 minutes peace
My and dh took it in turns in the night to have him sleeping in our arms while we watched mindless tv until it was the other one's tunr and we limped off to bed
I felt like I'd been run over by a bus so be kind to yourself, get as much help as possible, get friends and relatives to push him round the block while you get 20 minutes on the sofa and don't be afraid to use whatever works for you - dummies, co-sleeping etc etc

that'#s what newborns do! go with it,.
i'd second having him in a sling, something nice and soft like a moby would be ideal

nickytwoooohtimes · 15/10/2008 21:04

Oh, yes, as Compo said, lots of pram pushing and a dummy helped ds and kept me sane.

Thank you!! Sooo much conflicting do and don't out there!

Suwoo do you think maybe he could be too big for the moses basket by now?

SelfishBitch · 16/10/2008 16:00

Shit, maybe thats where I'm going wrong

Bloody DS pressing buttons.

My Ds was like this. I thought I'd been blessed with the grumpiest baby ever. I felt like I lived on the sofa with a small pirahna attatched permanently to my boob! He only ever fell asleep on the breast and if I was lucky I could then put him in his moses basket and if I wasn't he just slept on me. I am a nanny and all my charges went to sleep on their own and I was bummed that mine wouldn't and used to get really stressed by it as I saw it as a slight on my nannying/parenting skills . Eventually I just gave in and enjoyed the cuddles.

Today at 21wks Ds fell asleep in my bed on his own. ( I can't not tell you how excited I am by this progress! )I hope it will become a regular thing.

The early stages are so tiring but they will pass and it goes so quickly that you should try and make the most of it. Another couple of months and I'll have to find a job so no more long cuddles during the day . Enjoy it while you can!
