Supermarket screaming;happy not tantrums.

How on earth do I stop my 2yo DD screaming in supermarkets? This morning, I only popped in for a bagfull with her and my DS (7). He is an angel and knows now that if he behaves himself in shops then I treat him well for the rest of the day. However, DD knows that when she is in that trolley, screaming at the top of her voice brings attention. Not from me, but from other shoppers. And she does it very loudly and non-stop. Being a Sunday, the shop was obviously full of childless couples and one (horrible) man told her to shut up in a really nasty way.I said something really insulting to him (no swearing though!)which made my two laugh their heads off. I instantly regretted it but my face was burning with embarassment .She is perfectly happy shopping but sees it as a stage for her 'performance'. I've tried bribing, blackmail and distraction. I don't want to stop taking her shopping but I fear the hearing of the general shopping public may depend on it!

I used to put my dd in the trolley until she was at least 3 (strapped in the seat). I used to take snacks along, stuff that took her a while to eat, (e.g. dried fruit) plus spares if she dropped them.

I had a list but in my mind divided the list into stuff that I absolutely had to buy that day, and stuff that could be put off until another day if all went wrong.

Is there anyone you could leave her with for an hour or so, perhaps a friend who you could do the same for another day. Sunday mornings imo are the busiest time, first thing on Saturday seems better round here. (before 10am)

Internet shoping, it's the only way

LadyJH · 12/10/2008 13:02

I used to do internet shopping before we moved but we live so close to a huge Tesco I'd feel too guilty having it delivered. I usually try to shop in more 'child friendly' hours but I needed bits today. I've had staff come looking for the child that's clearly being strangled amongst the clothes rails before! I will try the 'split list' idea.

Oh ime the "huge Tesco" is part of the problem. We have one of those and if you forget the apples or whatever it is a 5 minute trek back, then you remember you didn't pick up the bread etc...

Keep away from the clothes with the dcs unless you desperately need new pants or something else urgent.

LadyJH · 12/10/2008 13:12

LOL. Yes, I would be prepared to got without pants rather than face that nightmare again!

My db used to do this with cathedrals. They were touring English cathedral cities when he was 2 and of course he worked out on the first day that cathedral acoustics are absolutely wonderful
