I've seen the thread below about late talkers but I'm not particularly concerned that DS has any 'problems'. He's interacting, playing games, communicating and babbling loads just wondering if he is a 'late talker'.

Have met 2 other children this week who are months younger than DS and they are both saying loads of words. I think DS said 'hiya' the other day but might have just been babble.

Just out of interest, when did your kids start building up a vocab?

Ds1 - towards his 2nd birthday. By 2 he was putting 2 words together fairly confidently, fluent speech came quite quickly.

Dd - started talking at 9 months - by 1 was speaking in sentences/phrases. Always been a VERY good and clear talker.

Ds2 - he is 2.5 and only just putting 2 words together. He's getting a bigger vocab now, but it has been very slow going.

Hi itchybird.

If your ds babbles and seems otherwise communicative I wouldn't worry too much,he is probably just a late talker.

Is everything OK with things like hearing, pointing at objects etc?Does he understand simple instructions?

If you get no speech by 2 it might be worth mentioning to the hv.If he is just a late talker,no harm done,if it is something more,at least hes in the system (often long waits for SALT assessment as they are a rare species.

DD has global delays and poor speech, but hers was quite evident as she never "babbled" a range of sounds.

first words for both just under one

DS1 2 words by about two,

DS2 def. less than DS1

guess I don;t talk as much to him either!
my sis didn't say a word til she was two, then hardly any until she was nearly 3 and then started in full sentances. - she is a bit of perfectionist so propbably didnt want to make a mistake.

ds1 had 30 words at 2, was referred then for SALT by our HV, now at 3.2 he has around 500 words and is pre dx for a language disorder or possibly high functioning autism.

ds2 is 13 months and has about 30 odd words already. He is very different and also communicates very well non verbally - lots of pointing, waving etc.

So glad we referred ds1 for SALT when we did, would definitely recommend you getting your ds on the list, you can always remove him if his speech starts to take off. If you have no other worries, it sounds like he's just a later talker and will probably catch up very quickly once he gets going.

My youngest said very little at 2 and now has been diagnosed as having moderate speech delay but does have advanced language skills. Basically her sentences, imaginative play, expressive & descriptive play is all above and beyond but there are lots of sounds she can't say so it's very difficult to understand what she is saying.

We're about to embark on some Johansen Sound Therapy for her as it's been offered to us cheaply.
