Reqs for a sling please?

my 2 week old is falling asleep on me but wakes up 10mins after being put down, whereas if I don't move for a few hours he sleeps fine! He does sometimes settle but seems to prefer sleeping on me. I was thinking of getting a sling so I can at least carry on with other things while he's attached to me. Am wary if buying one without asking first as I'm a size 20 atm so worried it'll arrive and not fit me! Any recomendations?

BlueJellie, I am not the world's expert on slings, but others on mn are.

You will want an adjustable sling. I think the ring slings tend to be. There are also some sling websites that rent slings to try out before you commit to buying. Or you could check out their return policies - I think they are legally obliged under distance selling regulations to offer returns/refunds.

If your ds wakes up after being put down, perhaps you could put your ds down in a lie-flat buggy instead and when he starts to stir, just rock him down again. Other things to consider include white noise (eg washing machine. I just play contemporary music).

I find it quite difficult to get on with things with infant in a sling. Bending is tricky. You cannot cook. You might be able to do some tidying or hoovering (white noise bonus) or paperwork. But something is still better than nothing.

It does get tiring on the back and shoulders as your ds gets bigger, though the choice of sling can reduce this.

you want something that supports your baby and supports you

ring slings or pouches are supposed to be good for tiny babies as you can pop them in and out - ring slings are adjustable so sizing shouldn't be an issue.

There's some advice on choosing a sling here (also a good shop, just got a wrap sling for DC2 there)

the most versatile sling is a wrap sling, but they can be a little daunting as you need to tie them in different positions. Maybe borrow one before you buy!

meant to say that carrying your baby in a ring sling for ouch for long periods will be tiring as they get bigger - this is where wrap slings come in as thety are much more supportive

Hiya

Confirmed baby wearer here, although I've always had the opposite problem being a bin narrow. Good help and advice to be had here:

and here:

It's great if you've got a Slingmeet near you as you can try before you buy . I made an expensive mistake early on. slings are brilliant though. Still carrying my 15 month old in a structured carrier. We love it

hi try www.snugbaby.co.uk

i'm a size 18plus and found their sling really well padded so it didn't dig in, i did have a ring sling but found it dug in to my shoulder no matter how i placed it, and have also tried other types, but this was more supportive on my back too.
they also can make a sling with longer ties if you need it, so it would fit.
