We have just been to Y1 parents eveing where they have given us a reading age for our child. Anybody know how this is calculated....and should I be concerned that his reading age is 5yrs 4 months when he is 5 years 8 months? (The teacher was 'surprised' at his reading age as he seems to be reading books at a much higher level.......)how accurate is this reading age calculation? Thanks........ just need to stop obsessing!!

I think they ask them to read words out and do a comprehension test. The more they get right, the higher the reading level. Maybe ds is reading the words but doesn't understand what they mean. Joke books are good for boys.

How the age is calculated depends entirely on the test they did. The tests are wildly different. It is quite possible for a child to score (say) 10yrs 2 months on one test, and 8yrs 4 months on another. This is because some tests check their ability to decode words i.e. c-a-t = cat, some test their reading comprehension i.e. A cat and dog were sitting down. Who was the cat sitting next to?

Unless you know which test it was, and therefore what it was testing, the numbers on their own are meaningless.

Oh, and some tests, like the ERT test a few things at once.

I don't think you need to be concerned. They don't expect children to learn to read until they are 6 here in France.

Oh, also meant to say, a reading age of 4 months + or - is a pretty spot on reading age. I wouldn't really take much notice of the age unless it was + or - 1 year.
