Ds is 16mo

His words so far are:

'Bang'
'No'
'Mama'
''kyou' (thankyou)
'hela' (hello)

None of these is particularly clear.

is this a bit on the slow side or is he well within average?

Please if you could list the words your child knows I'd be grateful!

Thanks x

evil....

whomovedmychocolate · 04/10/2008 20:06

Until last month DD said cat and mum and that was it. But she has suddenly blossomed into full sentences (albeit wobbly incomprehensible too fast sometimes sentences with crap grammar). Don't sweat it, it'll happen.

whomovedmychocolate · 04/10/2008 20:07

Should have said DD is two in a couple of weeks.

ShowOfHands · 04/10/2008 20:07

Yes she plays the piano. Discordantly and determinedly.

Swings and roundabouts isn't it? I bet there's things she's not so good at too. She's better than any baby in the world at putting the contents of the house in the bath when you're not looking and turning on the taps. She can also take all of her clothes off in 17 seconds, including her nappy and streak through the garden shouting 'brum brum brum'. Gifted, truly flipping gifted.

giddykipper · 04/10/2008 20:08

DS is 17 months. 2 months ago he said barely anything but now I reckon he has about 20 words - off the top of my head: mummy, daddy, sister's name, ball, bubble, all gone, hiya, yeah, shoe, choo choo, car, chair. He attempts the ITNG names - Upsy Daisy is daidy, Tombliboos is booboos, Makka Pakka is papa, Haahoos is hooos. Also does a few animal noises. It's really come on quickly and he's probably averaging a new word a day at the moment. A month ago though I started a thread very similar to this one!

LackaDAISYcal · 04/10/2008 20:10

on the downside of it all, every bit of cutlery in our house is "balloon". I say spoon, she says balloon. I say fork, she says ock, then points at it and says balloon. I say knife, she says balloon....and so it goes, on and on!

Weird thing is, she knows fine and well what a balloon is

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 04/10/2008 20:13

my dd is 19 months says
mummy,daddy mamma, pappa
nanan
dog
no
yes
hat
spoon
wait
hold on
all done/all gone
car
alma and mo
baby
wak wak (quack quack)
sheep
mam (lamb)
ETC....
loys of words that we know that other people may not understand.
copying more
oh and another new one......

wheres the POP

whomovedmychocolate · 04/10/2008 20:13

SoH - DD can lock the TV - we have no idea how the security settings work. She can also hide the car keys when she knows we have to go to the dentists.

But she also plays the piano and the drums (actually she's better at drumming than me except when she falls off the stool).

DD has also learned the following words this week 'fuck fuck fuck' (I dropped a kettle of boiling water down my front, 'stupid man' (driving) and 'kill squirrel kill!'

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 04/10/2008 20:16

lol SOH

Oh I forgot about in the night garden
we get ippy for iggle piggle
oh and she is obsessed with balloon and ball too.

she also knows lots of animal noises too

ShowOfHands · 04/10/2008 20:20

DD's favourite word of the moment is clock, only it doesn't come out like that so every time we walk past the church tower she screams 'look mummy cock' and I have to murmur well done to her as local elderly parishioners stare in bewilderment.

wmmc, clever girl you've got there. DD likes the mute button on the remote. Says 'shh' when she presses it and holds her finger to her lips. A comment on my tastes no doubt.

ilovetochat · 04/10/2008 20:21

15 month old says, mama, dada, baba, nana, gandad, hiya, apple, happy, ball, bisdit, yat (cat), oof oof (dog), macapaca, hat, yes, no and oh oh (when found cleaning toilet with toothbrush, silly girl, told her to use dadas next time

geordieminx · 04/10/2008 20:24

DS is 17 months - I started a thread last wek as he only says

Mamma
Dadda
Poo poo
Boop (ballon)
Hoooo (Haa Hoo)

WinkyWinkola · 04/10/2008 20:24

Bear
No
Me
Hello
Cheese
Bye
Nine
Balloon

But she's v. different to her brother who seemed to say many more words at the same age.

I wouldn't worry, INGMS. Your DS sounds like he's doing just fine. If he gets to four and still isn't talking, then I'd have a think about it.

lanismum · 04/10/2008 20:25

Dd1 at 18 months could say bugger all, she didnt speak in full sentences till she was almost 3.
Dd2 is nearly 18 months old and can say
mum-mum
dad-dad
nan-nan
louie
Lani
baby
pram
car
apple
cheese
no
yes
dora
diego
spongebob
pepper (pig)
phone
juice
bye-bye
night-night
ta
teeth
shoes
nappy
coat
bin
Her speech is really good, its such a shock to me as dd1 was really quite slow, suppose she has big sis to teach her!

whomovedmychocolate · 04/10/2008 20:26

SoH LOL at 'clock'

I thought DD was shouting 'ARSE' out the window until I saw the horses go past

Inevergivemychildrensweets · 04/10/2008 20:29

Lol WMMC!! Kill squirrel kill!

meandmyjoe · 04/10/2008 20:36

Sounds fine to me. my ds is 14 months tomorrow and ond only says 'mama', 'dad' and 'wasss dat' (what's that?').

oooggs · 04/10/2008 20:36

I can totally vouch for children being different!! our twins are 18 mths and ds2 says basic words

mummy, daddy, his name, his brother & sisters' names, aeroplane, no, yes, Bob and thats about it.

dd talks in sentences, gives orders to her brothers and repeats most things you say to her, she is a parrot and attempts most words and when she sees something simple, like a dog she will say dog and woof woof.

ds2 can do other things quicker and I know that what they are both doing is normal and eventaully it will even out.

catweazle · 04/10/2008 20:42

My DD is 18 mo.

Up until last week she could say up-up-up, mum-mum-mum, dat (that) mow (miaow without the e) and all gone.

Since the beginning of this week she has added mummy, dad-dad, eyes, nose, hello, bye-bye, duck, dirty, woof. She has also started asking for "num-nums" when she wants a BF.

I was starting to wonder if she would ever speak. At least one of her siblings had 30 words by now, and girls are supposed to be quicker.

MegBusset · 04/10/2008 20:45

DS is 19mo and says:

Mumum
Dadad
Nanan
Tea
Cheese
Toast
Muck (from Bob The Builder)
Duck
Dog
Toes
Owl
Towel
Star
Yes
No (this seems to be his favourite!)

jujumaman · 04/10/2008 20:46

Among my 16 month old's words are

onomatopoeia

nonchalance

genius

advanced

brilliant

large hadron collider

proust

debussy

Fauvism

"My mummy is a liar"

At least she hasn't picked up her sister's first word which was Calpol.

MegBusset · 04/10/2008 20:47

Oh yes, DS also said "Tits" after hearing Daddy say it

QueenofAllWildThings · 04/10/2008 20:47

DD is 16 months - she says 'shoe', 'thank-you' and 'uh-oh'. Quite normal I think, sounds like you are doing fine!

Bumperlicious · 04/10/2008 20:49

DD is 14mo and says

shoes
keys
daydie [baby]
daisy [upsidaisy]
cat
woof
moo
her name
La La
round round (round and round the garden)
uh-oh
hiya
ta (I didn't teach her this)

Oh and today she learnt "two" which she says after we say "one"

do-do-do-do-do means I want that now

She can say mama and dada but she doesn't use them in context.

Like the others said you shouldn't worry too much about comparing with others at this stage, but I know it's hard not too.

JammyOLantern · 04/10/2008 21:05

DD is coming towards 16 months and says "Da" (Dad) & "Ma" (Mum), but not always in context, and "iya" and "ello" (hiya and hello.)

She sometimes says "ah" at our cat, which I think might be meaning either "cat" or "Mia" (cat's name). She has once or twice said "airyar" (there you are) and gain (again) but literally just on an odd occasion.

So hardly anything really. I do sometimes worry, slthough i try not to.
