Do teeth just pop through or is it gradual?

Hi, dd is 16 weeks old and is teething. I can feel something hard on her top gum and she has 2 lumps on her bottom gum that come and go. I am sure the one at the top is a tooth.

I have been told that you usually just see them? I think the one at the top is just coming through now. How did everyone else notice the first tooth? Thanks.

4 months seems very early to me. DD was over 6 months when I could see the first bit of white come through. I remember it well - I was in Tesco's cafe at the time though now a bit fuzzy on the extact date (and indeed month, perhaps it was 7?)

My best friend has reminded me of assuming general gurniness must be a reason for teething and has been saying her DD has been teething from about 10 weeks old. At 5 months there's still no signs though!

Topically, I've just taken my 3 yo to the
dentist this morning and to my great surprise she is teething just now and still has a few teeth to come through!

Le us know though

Iirc dd had 2 little greyish bumps on her gum as the first sign. They can shoot through after that but it can take a while to grow.

With ds I just suddenly saw a tiny white bit sticking through his gum - I was most surprised because I'd forgotten about teeth and he'd showed absolutely no signs (dribbling, chewing etc). He was 5½ months old.

I thought it was too early aswell but she is dribbling like mad, chews anything put near her hands and is very miserable until I massage teething gel on her gums.

I have tried to look at her top gum but cant get a good enough look - I will wait until she is crying next! It is definitly sharp though and she isnt herself at the moment. She did have a cold last week but that has gone now.

oh if only they did just pop through!! In my experience its usually accompanied by a long and painful few weeks/ days (for all involved)of grumbling, dribbling and disturbed sleep. This is particularly the case with molars- less so for the front 8. However legend has it that some dc get their teeth without so much as a dribble so you (and your dc) might be lucky. I hope so!!

Oh so annoying gradual I'm afraid!

georgimama · 03/10/2008 15:33

I can usually see a little split in the gum for a couple of days, plus swollen when DS cuts a tooth, and a bit of white gradually emerges. Some are faster than others - he got his top 4 incisors simultaneously in a week!

Weeteeny · 03/10/2008 15:34

DS1 had teeth about 3.5 months and wasn't bothered at all - they just appeared - bottom ones first I think. By the time he started nursery at 9 months he had a full set! He wasn't bothered at all by them.
DS2 another story entirely!

She is munching on her hand and is making her finger go red so I am guessing that a tooth is there somewhere.....

Ok, she was munching on her hand today and drew blood.

I can see white tooth like things in her gums to the side at the top and bottom but cant feel anything.

So weird. It seems like they are coming through and then go back into her gums

it's very gradual - i am waiting for 10mo DD's top ones to appear at the moment. some days i swear they're about to pop through and then the next it's like they've gone again

in any case, once you can see them, it'll be n more than a few weeks for them to be right through

in the meantime, sore bottoms and grizzliness all round

lauraloola · 04/10/2008 22:35

Oh yes!! Her bottom is very sore at the moment. Bless her though, she is trying to be happy! She is still smiling but not talking so much x

my dd got white bumps on her gums and showed all the signs of teething around that age, for a few weeks iirc. They stopped before they broke through, and she was fine for a while then they finally appeared around 6-7 mo.

For us, each tooth meant about 3 weeks of slight symptoms (the occasional loose nappy, night waking, dribbling, excema flare up and more prone to nappy rash) and then a couple of days of more intense painful symptoms as the tooth actually broke through.

babyOcho · 04/10/2008 22:55

I had a dream last night that DD got her bottom teeth, she's been teething on and off for ages. So I was v excited and checked when we got up in the morning... still nothing.

lauraloola · 04/10/2008 23:01

Lol BabyOcho! Its really weird what I can see in dd's mouth. It really does look like teeth through her gums but it cant be.

She laughs her head off when I move her mouth to look for teeth - Thank god as I do it several times a day!!

Also now concerned that she drew blood on her hand earlier. She loves chewing on her hands and fingers so dont really want to cover them with scratch mits.

They can be 'teething' for quite a while before any teeth come through, so it could be possible that she is teething.

LittlePushka · 05/10/2008 00:56

DS1 - all symptoms as per book for a full four months before first cut at 9 mths. BAFTA winning performance for the poor chap with that one and EVERY single one since.

DS2 - first came at six months, did not even notice it until the plastic weaning spoon made a tapping noise . Not a whimper, dribble, or runny bum. Hence the mother totally missing its arrival!

LOL at babyocho checking for dream teeth!! Like trying to hang onto wedge of cash in dream in case it can make it through with you t the morning!!!
