My 3 month old dd seems to be having trouble settling with a formula, i have tried Aptamil 1 and easy digest, cow&gate comfort, i have just started using Hipp Organic but have found little advice on this. Does anyone have any experience/advice on Hipp Organic formula

Many thanks

i think they are all much of a muchness

when you say trouble settling, does she spit up/is sick a lot?

lulumama · 02/10/2008 17:56

agree with ruby, need to say a bit more about how she seems unsettled

appletise · 02/10/2008 18:02

Hi, she is sick when straining to poo, she seems to be in extraordinary pain, makes me cry just to watch her sometimes.

We thought it could have been reflux at first but the gaviscon makes little difference and the pain is only when she poos i.e not at every feed.

Somebody mentioned twisted gut but i know nothing about this either. GP said there is nothing they can do.

My DS had silent reflux and would SCREAM in pain

Gavsicon made it much worse - he ended up on ranitadine and domperidone and with a couple of weeks was like a different baby

There is plenty your GP can do = a referall to a Paedeatrician for a start even if it is to rule out reflux or twisted gut

trust your instincts - if you think your baby is in pain get a second opinion ASAP or present at A & E

CarGirl · 02/10/2008 18:05

Well if she is at all constipated or straining the gaviscon would make it worse at it makes the stools thicker/harder IME. I would go back to the dr as it's not normal and they generally don't recommend that you keep switching formula brands/types.

lulumama · 02/10/2008 18:06

seek a second opinion.

a child straining to poo and vomiting and in pain needs medical help

if your doc will not help , go to see a different doc or speak to your HV
or as ruby says, go to A&E
none of what you mention is normal, and needs addressing

how is her weight gain and is she weeing ok? does she seem ok the rest of the time

Buda · 02/10/2008 18:16

DS was a formula baby and he got constipated. Doc recommended an extra oz of water in every bottle. It worked for us.

When she poos are the poos dry?

appletise · 02/10/2008 18:17

Her weight gain luckily has been good, she wees very well and is ok most of the time.

I phoned the GP quite distressed last week, i'm sure he thinks i'm overreacting but unless they can see the pain she is in its hard when she appears normal when i take her to the GP.

Poos are not too dry, she drinks a little water luckily. I will try the extra oz of water in her bottle, good idea , hope it helps a bit anyway, thankyou.

She has just thrown up over my shoulder as i type this, i think i get through more clothes per day than she does

My dd was BF and had very bad reflux so was on gaviscon. She would go days without pooing and when she did they were like adult poos and she would scream. HV kept saying BF dont get constipated and that there was nothing wrong. This went of for weeks. In the end I found blood in her poo and rushed her to A&E. They found that she had been constipated for so long (probably due to gaviscon) the stools had become so hard and formed that she had split her bum. Poor baby she was only 2 months old. She was given lactulose (sp?) which helped.

Please dont leave it as long as I did get a second opionion asap...

bubblagirl · 02/10/2008 18:34

it is normal to have sicky babies and being sick when pooing is normal if very constipated as it pushes food upwards from straining

try warm boiled water to help but dont keep switching milk as its common for formula fed babies to have constipation my ds was always constipated until about 5 mths

i used to have to put small amount of vaseline on his bottom to help the hard poo come out as if i didnt he'd suck it back in and back to square one and used to have to rub his bottom with cotton wool ball to help stimulate to poo

just keep water intake going as much as possible hope it clears for her soon

CarGirl · 02/10/2008 18:34

I didn't read the being sick when straining to poo bit. I would just go to A&E if your dr won't refer you, in fact it may be quicker just to go to A&E it does kind of imply a blockage or chronic constipation doesn't it?

bubblagirl · 02/10/2008 18:43

yes if it doesnt clear then i would jsut take to a and e they tend to take things more seriously although ,my gp was fab with my ds when he wasa baby and now never took chances when it came to babies yours sounds a bit twatish

calaminecovered · 03/10/2008 12:25

My dd was very constipated on formula and sick all the time. We tried lactose free and it helped a lot - it is available on prescription - well it used to be was 5 years ago but worth asking.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/10/2008 12:31

There could be a number of reasons for this.

I'd get a second opinion with regard to checking for reflux.

It might also be an 'intolerance' to cows milk protein/lactose.

You need some more help from this than your GP is giving.

lilQuidditchKel · 03/10/2008 12:39

Get a second opinion ASAP. Go to A&E, if you can afford it, go to a private GP.

We ended up taking DD to private GP because my NHS doctors didn't believe she had a problem. She also would scream when trying to poo. She also was formula fed.

It turned out that she was very badly constipated and needed Movicol and Lactulose to soften and move her bowels. She was bleeding when she pood because of the strain.

Please, please, do not take no for an answer. Tell them there is a problem and they need to help you fix it.

saintvicsta · 03/10/2008 14:28

DS prefers the ready made stuff. Costs a bloody fortune tho so when he's having a bit of a struggle, we alternate it with his powder foods. We saw a great improvement.

lauraloola · 03/10/2008 14:30

I moved dd from SMA Gold to Hipp about 6 weeks ago - She is now 16 weeks old. We moved her as she was sick and had bad spots on her face. After a few days of changing she wasnt so sick and her spots went.

She also strains when pooing. She always has done but it not constipated. She will be sick when straining if she has just been fed but normally she wont be.

Could you lo be allergic to milk? You can get soya milk but I would get your GP or HV to comfirm to change first.
