when do toddlers drop their nap?

I am wondering how old toddlers are when they stop needing a nap in the middle of the day? I'm trying to plan ahead for a nursery place as it looks like I'm going to be offered an afternoon place (rather disappointingly!) which clashes with my son's nap time. He'll only have just turned two when he starts so I'm worried he'll be tired and miserable!

The pre-school my DD is going to attend in January when she is just 2, they first told me that they had only afternoon slots. I thought no way do I want to interfere with her nap time - I asked for my deposit back and she got a morning slot . Although DD at 22 months is showing signs of dropping her nap. Personally I don't think for most 2 year olds an afternoon session is best.

ds dropped his naps at 12 mths

DD started to drop hers at around 20 months. She only really has one now if we go on a longish journey in the car although she does generally have a quiet sit down time each afternoon while she recharges

DS only started having a nap at 12 months, until then he used to sleep 16 hours at night. Ah, those were the days!

My 23 month old naps 2-3 times a week (but only in the car or pushchair) - a month ago he was sleeping for 3 hours every afternoon still wakes at 3am as well ... (my dd droped her naps at about 2 as well).

According to my mum, I had an afternoon nap until the day before I started school! DD decided she didn't want one any more when she was about 35 although she was allowed one if she needed it. All children are different.
Isn't Montessori supposed to be very child-centred? Surely they wouldn't wake him if he did drop off.

Thanks these responses are really helpful. I'm now looking round for another nursery with morning places! Unfortuately as the nursery school session only lasts about 2.5 hours they don't do naps - and in fact I wouldn't want to be paying out for a nursery place for him to sleep through the experience regularly anyway! I dare say if he lay down they would let him sleep but having seen the nursery I would be amazed if he could sleep with all those kids running around and shouting! More likely he'll just get really grumpy by the time I get him home.

Seems a shame to force him out of the routine I've worked so hard to get him into now he sleeps so well after his lunch!
