When to move from cot to big bed?

Does anyone have any advice about moving my toddler from his cot to a big bed? He is 18 months - is this too soon? We were thinking of buying a normal size single bed and attaching a rail to stop him from falling out. We have a 3 month old who we want to move out of the moses basket into the toddler's cot. But is it too soon for the toddler to progress to a proper bed? I was hoping we could avoid buying another cot or a cotbed.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Chrissie

NBG - we fixed a shelving unit to the wall - as we could just see the temptation to climb proving too great - some toys are on the top shelf.

I don't know what else we could do as she needs to have the drawers as they have her clothes, towels, blankets etc in and we have no where else to put them plus they're new.
I don't think she would climb but she would pull the drawers open and I just think that one hard tug on them and they could tip over.

ARGH what to do??!!

Can you fix them to the wall with a bracket?

wobblyknicks · 07/04/2005 09:29

nbg - don't know which shop sells them, but saw some things that you fix onto the wall and the furniture that stops them falling over if pulled. Someone who's good with finding things is sure to pop up soon!!!

Btw - you're scaring me now, have been thinking about putting dd into a proper bed myself for a while but am too much of a coward - don't want to disturb the peaceful nights!!!!

You can get all sorts of saftey things - fit the drawers to the wall as mentioned, and also on the drawers themselves so they can't open more than a few inches - so the thing can't topple over.

Our dd has never tried this. She just opens the door and comes to 'visit us' at 6am demanding that I get her milk and a cup of tea for dw!!

My ds is 1yr. I put a stair gate on his bedroom door so he cant get out. If he wakes up he just plays with his toys until he hears one of us get up.

NDG can you not buy saftey catches for your drawers, stop her from opening them.

Maybe we should try the stairgate. However, after 3 months of being able to get through the door, I'm sure she would stand in the doorway, rattling the stairgate and yelly "DADDY!!" at the top of her voice until I got up.

We don't have that problem. But we do get greeted with a pile of toys outside is door!

we never could do the tot bed...ds climbed out his crib one night and hit the hard floor. i thought he broke his neck..bed was down that night...!!!i thought about tot bed, tried it...NOT!! fell out..

So we did the pallet on the floor with blankets...couldn't have been any safer...

now in twin size bed..against wall with railings...perfect...

We moved dd (almost 3) into her big girl's bed last weekend (full size single) from her cot bed. She loves it and seems absolutely fine - she was still perfectly happy in her cot bed though, the move being necessitated by the imminent arrival of No2. I though she would be roaming around like mad every night and creeping into our room at the crack of dawn but so far so good - it is actually less hassle as she can now get out of bed on her own and potter around her room to get what toy/book she fancies without calling on us to do it.
