A survey: how much sleep does your Year 1 5-/6-year-old get?

DS1 gets up at about 7.15am, and his bedtime is at about 8pm, but increasingly he's saying that he's not tired. Left to his own devices he'd stay up until about 8.30/9 (and then go to sleep very quickly). Is this enough sleep?

I'd rather that he stayed up later and went to sleep quickly, rather than going to bed sooner and clumping around saying that he's not tired.

My 5yo has just gone up to bed now (10pm).
More usual for her to go about 9pm. She's up at 7-7:30am.

I think it depends on the child.
Another of my dd always needed to be in bed by 8pm sometimes earlier. Even now at 17y she will prefer to go up to bed at 9pm.

Is your DS1 tired and yawny during the day? Is he struggling to concentrate at school? If not, it sounds as if he's getting the right amount of sleep!

DD goes to bed 7.30ish (sometimes 8) but not asleep until 9.30ish (often 10) and up at 8.I have to say she does sometimes have a lie-in at the weekend that suggests to me she could do with more. Don't know how to get her to sleep earlier tho!

I heard a radio programme that said there is NO recommended time, but if your child was showing signs of tiredness (and this can include being hyperactivity) - that's when there's a problem.

dd nearly 7 (YR2) sleep 7.45 - 8 ish, usually have to wake her 8am.
ds 2.11 sleep same time, waskes around 7 ish he has about 1 hour nap in the day.
More narky if they have less sleep especially dd.
