My DS won't nap in his cot!

any suggestions how to tackle my DS's(18 wks) inability to nap in his cot? In fact he only wants to nap while being pushed around in the pram. This wasn't a problem in spring & summer but I am a bit reluctant to spend 3 or more hours each day in the rain trying to get him to sleep! He will now also sleep in his pram indoors but has to be pushed to sleep first. Our house isn't huge so this isn't very convenient and I also worry about him not learning how to nap cot when he's 9 months and has to go to nursery! Any advice please?

Asicsgirl & starkaddar, thank you so much for your advice and sharing of your experience, you have no idea what a music to my ears they are! I've touched the bottom yesterday with both DS and me in tears and decided that for better of worse I will now do anything to keep us both tear free - i.e. no sleep training or forcing the cot on him and letting him nap wherever he wants and we've had an amazing day with him asleep at home in his pram for ages, me getting loads done and when he woke up he was in a fantastic mood. It's sooo nice to now read that I am on the right track. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I would advise to anyone goung thru a similar phase as me to stop worrying and enjoy your baby more. It pays to do that!

me too! I don't think I have ever given good advice before so am feeling ridiculously proud of myself :-) My baby currently asleep in his pram, all well with the world...

Oh thank god, Im not the only mum with this problem. My 3 month old baby, sleeps in his cot in our room from 7pm till 5.30am, but in the day will not nap in cot. He starts getting tired and I can read the cues, its just I dont know where to put him to sleep. He only sleeps on me on the sofa, or in the pram whilst walking or being rocked in pram in kithen, and only naps for half an hour. Im feeling really tired as I cant get anything done in the day and its causing arguments between me and my husband.

If I put him in his cot awake, and i soothe him, he cries so loudly.

Please can someone reassure me its ok to put in pram for now and if things will get better

Broucek, glad that it seems to be working out for you.

None of mine have been keen on napping in their cot until at least 6-7 months (dds or ds).

I used to park them in their pram/pushchair either in the kitchen in winter or if raining/chilly, or in the garden if dry/warm enough.

If they had trouble settling I used to put on the washing machine, and the 'white noise' seemed to help.

DD is 16 months and naps in her pram. I'm fine with it, she's fine with it. If it ain't broke...

I'm so glad I found this thread... I thought I was the only one. My 8 month old can only ever sleep in her cot or in my arms [yes I often hold her for over two hours so she can nap!]. Lately I've been trying desperately to get her in to her cot during the day [in preparation for nursery] now I just have an over tired cranky baby. Oh dear.

andrea1906 · 17/02/2011 20:50

Ooops. I meant she'll onlt sleep in her PRAM or my arms.

this is an ancient thread!

my baby (7 months tomorrow) sleeps in our bed for his long daytime nap, but on my lap for the short one and occasionally for the long one too. i'm not too bothered tbh, it's a good excuse to sit and do nothing/go on MN.

When I went to look round a nursery the other day i saw one of the workers cuddling a baby to sleep and then letting him sleep on her lap till he was soundly asleep enough to put him down. nursery will manage.
