Ds1 is 3 (last week) he is starting proper therapy soon.
he barely puts two words together. He does get a bit better, but then evens out for weeks on end with no new words, nothing.
I am an intelligent, educated, non fussy, down to earth mum - but why won't he speak!
(question nobody else can answer I know)
I honestly think I'll be sitting here in ayear typing the same thing.
Nobody is fearinf ASD by the way - I just have a horrible suypicion - with no proof - that there's going to be something else.
I need a little boy now - not a baby
I think I'm going to cry...

Escape, your experience with the SALT would be funny if it wasn't so upsetting.
Why would he want to describe what was happening in those pictures?
You might enjoy the "Einstein Syndrome" book. It has two whole chapters full of testimony from parents about the ridiculous and artificial nature of the tests that some therapists put kids through.

The therapist in my town is nice. She says things like "try to enjoy him" and "find what he likes" and "for every word he gives you, give him two back".

Could the person who has done the HANEN course give me a link? It sounds like it might be worth going on if it is as good as the book.

ah yes the renfrew picture action test. I'm on the fence as to it's usefulness - as on one hand it does show what a kid can comment on, and how they make sentences etc. but on the other hand, day to day conversation doesn't tend to involve a series of photos to comment on(!).

only link I know of for hanen courses is www.hanen.org. you will have to ask SALT department if they run the course (I think they usually do). Some surestart centres run a basic versi0on of a Hanen course - but it's not as good, and not necessarily even run by a SALT.

i didn't speak until i was almost 4, then spoke in full sentences. my first words were "don't worry mum, i'm ok" as we left a specialist appointment.

no other problems with me then, or now.

my friend didn't speak til he was 4 either. He got 5 A's at A level and is now a top city banker. Again when he did speak his progression was fast, no baby talk.

just thought i'd share.
