My DS is 6 and I would say that he does the majority of these things. He has the attention span of a flea and seems to think that everything has to be done at top speed and full volume - I'm hoping this is just normal for a 6 yr old boy or I'm in trouble

bitofadivce · 07/08/2008 16:51

oh thank you itas been getting to us

My son has dyspraxia & Aspergers and I recognise all of that. It's not that ordinary kids don't do some or even most of those things some of the time, but that my kid does them all of the time, and is noticeably different to his peers. If that's the case for you, then you could ask your GP to refer him. What does his school say about his behaviour?
I am a huge believer that you know your son best, and your instincts are often right.

cornsilk · 07/08/2008 16:54

Agree with MrsDemanour. All of those things are normal for a 6 year old, but if you think that the extent to which he does them is significantly more extreme than other boys of his age then you could have a word with your GP.

brimfull · 07/08/2008 16:56

mine ,nearly 6 does a few of those things
fidgets
can't walk without skipping/kicking stone, similar to fidgeting really
but he doesn't shout ,no hands in mouth and isn't obsessive

but your ds sounds quite normal really

Interesting article here www.netmums.com/h/n/SUPPORT/sn/ALL/1242/

belcantavinissima · 07/08/2008 16:59

hi, some of these things read Aspergers to me too (and i have 2 dc with it (poss 3!!!)). what do the school say? do they have any concerns?

bitofadivce · 07/08/2008 17:00

is last report says very much same as we see but he can not mix with other children only on a one to one basis, they been doing show and tell all year but he can not do it, like i said hes a bright boy know all the numbers but can not answer questions in front of class is teacher think hes shy( hes not) there is a lot going on its getting worse his talking is like an adult but never shuts up.

I think they could be just normal tbh
I also have a son with aspergers and dyspraxia and i only recognise 2 of the things listed (obsession and not walking alongside)
Also know at least 4 NT 5/6 year olds who do at least 4 things off your list

Troutpout · 07/08/2008 17:03

oh ok..that last post is ringing more bells actually
Talking like an adult and not mixing with other children.

bitofadivce · 07/08/2008 17:10

since hes been small ive always said there was some thing but my dh didnt agree he used to line his trains, cars in same way ! same way ,colour coded, in same amout of numbers in groups of 10 but again i know normal children do this too. sorry maybe i am thinking to much in to this?

i think regardless you are worried so seek profeesional help you will then no one way or another and he will get extra help at school which he can only benefit from

MsDemeanor · 07/08/2008 18:21

Seriously, I would see your GP with a list of your concerns and ask for a referral, or see the SENCO at school and ask her to organise it through the school if you prefer.
I know it's scary to contemplate, but you are clearly thinking and worrying along these lines anyway.

trace2 · 09/08/2008 09:32

hi all its me trace2 who asked for advice for ds i am going to ring gp for an app! thank you for the sdvice dh still thinks or dont want to belive there s any thing wrong! if there is?

fatzak · 09/08/2008 10:59

Hi trace how are you? He sounds just like DS1. The fidgetting, not listening and not being able to walk at our side are just like him. We know that we have a harder time with him this year thanks to his bloody meds (which have now been changed and made a lot of difference thank gooodness) but I really believe that a lot of it is little boys!

Do go and see your GP if you are so worried who will hopefully put your mind at rest.

trace2 · 09/08/2008 11:26
