Has anyone had any experience with a Play Therapist?

I am considering taking my kids to a play therapist as we are having some really bad problems at the moment. Does anyone have any experience with these they could share? Or is anyone a play therapist that wouldnt mind helping me to decide if this is the best thing for the boys?

Thanks

My son has just had 6 months in play therapy. I have no idea at this point if it has helped but it has been advised he has a break and then has more. I would suggest going to your gp for advice or if you are local to a Sure Start they can be very helpful. They are the ones who found the play therapy for my son. I really hope this helps you. Take care xx

Thats great, I have a behaviour intervention centre near me and they know a play therapist. I can not get one on the NHS tho as it is not classed as severe enough difituilties for them to deal with. Will have to go private.

from what i know play therapy is for quite dee set tramaua and therefore the sessions need to go on for a long period of time - it might be worth considering this if you are going private as costs could mount up.

Can you go through your GP or school and get some help from the public sector?

I can speak to a school nurse for my 6 year old and see what they can do, and my 7 year old already has a CPN so IM hoping they can do something but in the 8mths hes being seeing the CPN they have mostly concentrated on myself.
I was wondering if I should start another thread about the actual issues to see if anyone has any advice about that rather than play therapy

why not? I am always overwhelmed by the wealth of experience without judgement that mumsnet produces.

I think i will, it will be quite long tho

best wishes.

I think any creative therapy is of benefit to any child. I would also recommend art therapy.
Although it can be quite expensive, check with local charities, schools, gp, social workers, as some places have therapists attached and all you need is a referral.
