Moses basket mattress

Hi there.
I wonder if someone could help, my daughter is 9 weeks old and although I love rocking her to sleep as it's not forever I will be doing this, when I put her in her moses basket after 20 - 30 minutes she wakes up. I think the standard mattresses are hard and horrible, I have now changed to putting in a big pillow (oxford size from our bed which takes up the whole basket, it is so much more comfortable as it cradles her. It was worked marvellously and she sleeps so soundly. I am concerned that I am making a mistake though, is there any reason why I should not be doing this ? Thanks

hmmmm not sure you should be lying her on a pillow,it could cause her to overheat .

Beauregard · 02/07/2008 14:22

Have you tried swaddling her?

Farfalla · 02/07/2008 14:33

Thanks so much for your response. Yes, she hates being swaddled, the pillow is lightweight and has a white cotton pillowcase but I was also worried about that. She does not sink into it, but it's just softer than the mattress which is a little like an ironing board.

i used one of these when dd2 was a baby
It may give your dd a bit more comfort than just the mattress and the sided make them feel secure.

Thanks so much - I will definitely give that a try.

I put a folded up towel under the mattress to give abit more cushiness

I think if she managed to turn over, the pillow might mould to ths shape of her face and suffocate her. A mattress wouldn't do this. Babies are not supposed to have pillows/quilts until 12 months. She will be out of the basket quite soon (probably) anyway. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Farfalla · 02/07/2008 16:06

Yeah, that is a very scary thought but true. Thanks - just wish they made softer mattresses for moses baskets.

You can buy mattresses seperately for basket, which aren't quite as hard. I wouldn't put a pillow in the basket personally.

Farfalla · 02/07/2008 17:21

I have looked around and only found quite hard ones. What about a sheepskin ?

I personally would be very cautious about putting anything in a mosses basket or cot at a young age that does not have proper air vents.
Before you decide to add anything, maybe think about researching SIDS a bit and what the researchers have found that are risks.
Maybe try putting dd in a cot? There are a wider selection of mattresses.

We did exactly the same with ds1. At a few weeks they aren't going to roll over. We used a nice firm pillow and wedged it well into the basket and popped a cotton sheet on top of him so he didn't get too hot. Worked brilliantly for the few weeks he was in there. Then we transferred him to his cot with a much nicer mattress and used a lamb skin which he loved too. For ds2 we just cut the lambskin in half and used that instead. We got ours from John Lewis.

one thing that a HV told me and i thought was a very sound advice is... what babies dont know what to do in one minute, they might learn on the next. so i would be careful with the pillow.

Farfalla · 04/07/2008 09:56

Thanks - I think the pillow is too dangerous. I will keep searching for a softer mattress.
