Speech - how old were your DC's?

DS is 18 months and has a few words he can say really well. He understands lots and lots of things, as we have always talked to him constantly.
Should he be saying more words yet? I know each child is different and am not concerned about him, just interested in other's experiences. Luckily one of his favourite words is yes rather than no (so far.....)

fairly typical of mine at that age.

You will love it when he gets to the no stage ! And why ? is even better

chocbutton · 29/06/2008 20:00

lol, am dreading the why stage, just experienced it with a cousin's DS!

This seems great. My daughter couldn't speak at all at that age but I wasn't concerned. It actually turnes out that she has a seveer speech disorder. I only started to worry when she got to about 2.5 and she started nursery. I realised then what other children of the same age were like. I'm sure he'll be fine as yes is a hard word to master.
We also talked constantly to our daughter, we sing to her, nursery rhymes ect. We speak very clearly but it has made no difference. Who knows though, perhaps without all our input she may be a lot worse. Keep up the good work with chatting and singing to him. He sounds a real sweetie.

Elibean · 29/06/2008 20:07

Sounds much like dd2, with the exception of 'noooo' which she says well and uses often

dd1 started 'why' at exactly 2.5, even though I told her the average age for 'why' was 3

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2008 20:08

mine is 29mo and has (in the last 2/3 months) quite alot of works that he can say not very well.
He doesn't put 2 words together yet.
He understands everything we say to him (well within reason) and makes himself well understood.
He is behind on his speech though.
Yours sounds fairly typical of an 18mo. My ds2 certainly didn't have ANY words at 18mo, and I don't think ds1 did either - and omg once ds1 did start talking there was no stopping him.

LittleMyDancing · 29/06/2008 20:10

DS started speaking about 12 months I think, and is now 2.3 and very fluent, but compared to his peers I think he's quite ahead.

Chatty little bugger

chocbutton · 29/06/2008 20:13

thanks for these, will carry on as we are and wait for the deluge of unwanted words!!

Best friends both have boys, 3 months apart.
Boy 1 - started talking just under 18 months, speech is now ok, bit slurred in that he does not pronounce all his words clearly.
Boy 2 - did not start speaking at all until well over 2 years old. Mother was a bit concerned. He is 3 months younger than (as it happens the other boy is) his cousin Boy 1. He talks more clearly, and fluidly, sentence structure is great.

They are both 3.

My lovely DD talks endlessly, but did not start until 3 months ago? She could say the odd word here and there, and then suddenly. after a trip to USA to see family, she came back and within a week was talking in three word sentences, now four, now she actually has conversations.

She also said why twice in the last week, but not with much conviction, and I think she has copied someone from nursery rather than have any grasp of what it means....yet !

My health visitor told me (correctly/incorrectly? not sure) that they expect child to say approx 50 words by their 24 month check.

ingles2 · 29/06/2008 20:31

ds1 was saying a few words at 18 months and then progressed slowly but surely..
ds2 didn't saying anything until he was gone 2 but then came out with long reams... he now has extrordinary language skills at 7.
Have you had his hearing checked btw? Might be worth looking into if his speech is a little slow. ds2 had glue ear which definitely slowed things down, but tbh he sounds just right to me

Jas · 29/06/2008 20:37

DD1 was speaking in sentences at 18 months.

DD2 I can't remember, but was definitely fairly fluent by2.

DS at 18 months - nothing.
At 2 - No and mummy
Now (2.4) Lots of words and some sentences, but mispronouncing lots, and awaiting speach therapy appt.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2008 20:38

really Jas, that's more than my ds2 (same age) and I hadn't even considered speech therapy.

evenhope · 29/06/2008 21:03

DD1 15 words by 18 months

DS1 4 words at 18 months

DS2 15 words by 18 months

DS3 18 words by 18 months

DD2 is 15 1/2 months and only says up and mum-mum-mum

Jas · 29/06/2008 21:07

CS - I didn't ask. When he failed the two yr check on lack of speach they said come back in 3 months, and even though he did improve, she (the hv) wanted to refer him just in case there is a problem, so I agreed.

I don't think there is a problem, and suspect I will cancel his appointment when he gets it as he is really improving alot at the moment, but I have nothing to lose by an early referral.

Ask your h/v if you are worried.

googgly · 29/06/2008 21:08

evenhope, how on earth can you remember? You must be bionic.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/06/2008 21:34

Jas - they have ditched the 2y check here. I called the HV about that time to ask and just mentioned lack of speech. She said to keep an eye on it and call back in 3/6 months if I was still worried (I wasn't worried in the first place, just thought I better flag it with the lack of 2y check).
Am not worried, although he is behind where ds1 was at the same ago (ds1 started why? at 2.5y) and ds1 was behind average. He can obviously hear us and understand us, and is saying more and more - albeit unclearly atm.
He has just learned to say Fat Controller - "at troller", v cute, ds1 keeps asking him to repeat it .

Jas · 29/06/2008 21:39

Aww

I'm not really concerned at the lateness tbh, but it is very noticable now that he is trying alot more that he can't seem to say anything with two consonants together, hich I would like checked by someone who knows if it doesn't resolve itself.

Sorry for slight hijack chocbutton.

uhohgruffalo · 29/06/2008 21:45

I didn't know there was a two-year check. I'd better go ask my clinic about that.. DS is nearly two, but he speaks far more than most of his little friends. Language is kind of his thing, IYKWIM. Most of the other kids I know at his age don't speak that much. I did have a friend whose son only had a few words at two. They were convinced of massive speech problems. Ten months later, he is a chatterbox who speaks clearly and in perfect sentences. Go figure.

evenhope · 29/06/2008 21:49

googly- I didn't remember at all I cheated and looked up their baby books

(I was planning to anyway because we're getting a bit worried about DD2's lack of speech. TBH I'm amazed DS3 had the most words- we "remembered" him not speaking until he was 2!)

Mytholmroyd · 29/06/2008 23:02

DD1 said very little - just single words really but understood quite complex requests - like "please could you go in the kitchen and fetch me the brush" - until she turned 2 and then almost overnight she started talking in sentences.

DD3 started babbling at birth and has never stopped (she's six now) - the babble just turned organically into words so there was no abrupt change.

They were very different.

DS1 is 2 years 3 months and talks quite well now but hasnt started "Why?" yet. He has just started saying "I". He says "Whats that noise?" "I dont know" "I need to get up now" "I need to go outside next"

I think he is speaking quite well and its very clear but he gets a lot of practice!
