Hi Mumsnet, ive been reading on here for a while but this is my first post 👋
So my DS is just turned 5 and for context hes a very happy heathy little boy, however we have a few concerns.
Hes still never slept through the night without atleast one wake up, hes easy to settle usually and most times ends up in our bed by morning which we dont mind.
Hes also been potty trained since just after 3 years old, however we still have atleast one wet accident a week, usually if were out shopping, at soft play ect however recently weve had a few accidents at home, one yesterday while having dinner he just paused and weed himself. Dh thinks its just normal development but im feeling like hes abit old to be having frequent accidents (hes still in pull ups at bedtime but we know thats nothing unusual or something we can do anything about)
So really im just looking for other people's opinions and experiences. Thsnk you

I’d say weeing himself mid meal at 5 is unusual. Is he encouraged to go to the toilet and wash his hands before meals are served?

Does he understand that he can excuse himself mid-meal if he needs to go and is he capable of going to the toilet and washing his hands by himself?

He knows he can go to the toilet whenever he needs to, he can use the toilet independently yes, sometimes needs help doing up jeans/buttons. The accident at dinner are rare, its usually if were out or hes distracted

I would be encouraging him to have a wee and wash his hands before food, just do his bladder is empty and it’s one lady thing for him to have to deal with.

Could he be constipated? That can make them wee themselves sometimes.

If that isn’t the problem I’d look at the 60 month Social & Emotional Ages & Stages and this simple progress checker from Speech & Language UK.

He goes regularly so not worried about constipation currently, the daytime accidents aren't everyday, probably once or twice a week (even though we've had two accidents today, one small one out shopping, one complete bladder empty whilst playing, unfortunately on nanny's carpet 🫣)

How was he afterwards? Is he bothered or does he just carry on?

Did you find the assessments I linked to of any use?

Hes unphased tbh, he just goes " uh oh mummy, I weed my pants", sometimes I think he doesn't feel it coming as he does sometimes dribble before running to the toilet, other times he'll just have a full accident. Yes I read the link, hes absolutely fine in other areas, it's just the daytime wetting thats the issue, he never has soiled accidents. We're thinking of getting a watch with reminders to go to the toilet, to see if that helps x

My DS is 5 and just the same with wees. He also had a phase of getting up in the night but it settled back down, some nights he asks to sleep in our bed which we don’t mind. Just go with it, I’m sure all is fine

Not something I’d experience with either. My almost 5 year old DS was trained at 2.5 and would maybe had the odd (once a month or so) accident until about 3 and then never since. Was dry at night from about 3.5 but as you said that just hormonal.
I do think the not sleeping through is normal though. I think most children do wake up it’s whether they need intervention or not. 9/10 time my DS gets out his bed and puts a tonie on then gets back in bed put himself back to sleep but occasionally he’ll call me through and ask to be re tucked in. Never comes in my bed though. Loves his own bed. Same can’t be said for his younger sister 🙄
