Newborn sleeping / PFB mother...

Hi,

I have a 5 week old son who just recently has been sleeping more...

He sleeps for probably 16-18 hours of the day, maybe a bit less.

We have got into a good routine and he doesn't cry too much and we do spend some time each day playing etc.,

His eye co-ordination is good now and he's nearly there with smiling, but not sure I should mention this to the HV (am seeing her tomorrow)

He's feeding very well and is now 11lbs (6lb8oz when born)

Sorry for PFB tendancies of this question... but I'm on my own and don't have anyone else to ask.

What is the question - are you worried he is sleeping too much?

popmum · 25/06/2008 17:52

what's the question!?

He sounds perfectly normal to me. As you say he is doing more, therefore he will probably be a bit more tired. It will all change again next week probably! Mention it to the HV if you want to set your mind at ease, she will have heard much worse! Did you go to any antenatal classes? Did you make friends with anyone there? I grabbed onto those I met in my antenatal classes and as they were all a few weeks ahead of me I used them as a sounding board for everything for my first born. I'm not in touch with any of them now (all we had in common was new babies) but we all helped each other when we needed it!

Sorry! Yes, I am worried that he's sleeping a bit too much... (thanks Deedledum)

No, I didn't go to any antenatal classes - I worked up until DS was born (literally, the DAY before he was born! and work weren't great at giving me time off for appointments and, as I needed the job, I kept my head down and kept working....

He wasn't sleeping this much a couple of weeks ago, but not sure if that's because he spent more time crying because I wasnt' as clued up on what he wanted / needed, IYSWIM...

Hi, I have looked after lots of babies and some sleep a lot, enjoy! As long as he is feeding well, which you say he is. Try not to worry you are doing fine.

Are there any baby groups or post-natal groups in your area? Your HV should be able to tell you about any. Other mums in the same situation are vital at his stage to help you realise you and your baby are on the right tracks....which is clearly why you have found MN!
