ds2's weight is off the bottom of the charts - should I start to be concerned?

He is 11 months old and weighs about 15lbs. He eats well, breastfeeds regularly and is a happy baby. It may just be that he is meant to be small, but could there be an underlying issue I wonder? Am I hiding my head in the sand?

What's his height? If he's small in height I wouldn't worry. i would deffinitely mention it to your gp or dr's though. I doubt it's anything to worry about. My friend's ds was like this til he was about 14 months but now he's 2, he's average height and weight so they all tend to even out and level off in the end. Like you say, he seems happy and content, eats well, so it's unlikely he's ill. I'd check it out just to put your mind at rest more than anything. I n the mean time, enjoy the fact that you get a lot of wear out of your baby clothes!

Are you & your dh small? Dd skids along the bottom of the tables - hv initially got us to come in more regularly (I mean, more often than once every 6 months ) but after a while we decided between ourselves she was fine. Ito other things I scared myself with, I guess celiacs (can't spell it, but wheat intolerance) is the obvious one. Unlikely if (like dd) he's a happy sort of chap, though.

violetsmile · 24/06/2008 18:59

I agree that if it were an intolerance then he'd be grumpy or vomitting or have rashes and tummy cramps. I'm sure he's fine. I worry that my ds is too big (10 months and is 26lbs ) so i guess we mummies are always going to worry, we are just programmed that way!

Thanks for the responses. Yes this is what I keep coming back to - his height and head circumference are all tiny too - and he is such a happy contented chap, no problems with bowels or bladder, eats loads, developmentally on target ... oh and I'm 5'2" and dh is 5'7" !

I guess I'm answering my own question! It's just that he hasn't put on any weight at all since he was weighed two months ago. He will have a developmental check when he is one and I think we may well get referred ... we'll see.

Anyone else with a teeny tiny?

I had one (he's 9 now) - was on the 0.4th centile on the charts. He is still tiny but healthier than most children in his class!

Miaou · 24/06/2008 19:39

That's reassuring QueenMeabh - I'm just concerned that I'm being too laid back about this.

I wondered about that too but my ds is so fit and healthy that I've decided to chill about it!

FeelingEvil · 25/06/2008 19:18

My year old DD is tiny. She's been off the centiles since ... oh I can't remember last time I had her weighed. But then, I'm only 4'9" and DH is 5'10", so I'm not bothered as she's healthy, alert, meeting all milestones, eats like a horse, etc.

Oh, and I weigh 6 stone - so if I had my weight plotted, I'd be off the centiles too, and I'm perfectly healthy, just small like my dd.

Ecmo · 25/06/2008 19:22

my ds wasn't even on the shaded bit at the bottom!
all my children are small. My dd2 is 11 and is 122cm tall which is average for about 6-7year olds I think. I'm 5'1 and dh is 5'6
