Hi, I'm just looking for a bit of advice about what could be going on for my ds who is 4 in August. He's my 4th and has always been the absolute most difficult in many ways.

I'd like to try and help us both in managing this. Nursery has suggested that he needs a doctor appointment, but won't suggest any possible suspected label. Doctor says they can't assess him until he's 6 for autism, adhd etc. Meanwhile, he really is a constant whirlwind and it's really really hard.

Examples are... (and these are all an extreme, not 'normal' level behaviour for this age) Throws items, constantly moving (running, rocking from foot to foot, spinning etc), grabs at things or hits me while in the shopping trolley (uncontrollable if not in a trolley), doesn't ever listen, runs away outdoors, sleeps no more than 8 hrs, needs continuous attention, there's no let up (asking questions, wants me to look at what he's doing, play with him etc). Adores numbers, wants to count, do maths all the time. Only thing which holds his interest for more than a few minutes is the tablet or tv.

I know many of these sound normal, which of course they are. But all my friends and family tell me they don't know how I cope with him. We've just come back from holiday and he definitely stands out when with other children...demanding their attention constantly, getting in their faces etc. We ended up in hospital because he cut his head by falling over. He is covered in bruises from constant movement. Other children sit and watch a show to some extent, meanwhile he's charging around like a thing possessed...always. There is also no tiring this kid out, I've tried!

I'm not really sure what I'm asking for in the post, just someone who can relate? Help 😅

I’m so sorry that your GP has misinformed you. They are right that your DC has to be around 6 before they can assess for ADHD but they can absolutely refer you for an assessment for ASD now.

Have the Nursery made any referrals or suggested talking to your HV?

Have they also suggested applying for an EHC Needs Assessment? If not, I would do this now as they are based on need rather than diagnosis Flowers

EHC needs assessments

An EHC needs assessment is an assessment of a child or young person’s education, health and care needs
