20 month ds falling frequently

My son is 20 months and has been walking since Feb but he still falls frequently more when we are out on rough ground but he can fall in the house sometime over nothing. It's worse when he's tired I've spoken to the health visitor and doctor who both say it's normal and not to worry. Just wanted to know if your children still fall lots after 4 months of walking.

It's normal. With dd it carried on until she was about 5, then her co-ordination got better.

Your son has only been walking for four months; he has a long way before he masters the technique

this is very common and normal in relation to his body his head feels about 3 x the weight therefore his balance is affected also they tend to have no fear or way of gauging a step or a slope - this all comes with age so soon he will gain a better perspective.

by the way its the law that the first day he wears shorts or new shoes he will fall and graze his knees and scuff his shoes

My dd was always falling over until about six months ago, she's now 3.4yrs.

A friends dd also did and she took hers to GP. GP said that often children who are tall for their age will fall a lot and it was nothing to worry about.

My dd is tall for her age. Is your son?

No he's not particularly tall for his age. He's quite stocky not fat but well padded.

He's only just starting to walk - he is bound to be wobbly for a bit yet. It really is perfectly normal.

I always found with dd (also very tall for her age; interesting theory there) that she was more likely to fall when she was having a growth spurt - almost as if she wasn't quite sure where the edges were.

my DS can fall over a blade of grass

he is 2.1 and has been walking for about 7 months

most of the toddlers i know are still a wee bit unsteady on their feet

WWB - interesting about the growth spurt

my dd is 22m and is very wobbly and been walking for about 6 months. She'll do that comedy about to fall backwards thing and windmill her arms around to catch her balance! She won't even attempt to walk on rough ground. DD1 who is 5 was always falling down till about 4ish (very tall for her age/weight). Neither of mine have got very big feet either ... just in case that makes a difference!

I've been told by a doctor he is double jointed can this cause unsteadiness?

My son went through a phase of falling at that age (he walked at 10 months) - I was worried - but it seems to have passed now (25 months). So I would give it a while and see what happens - if not though go back for a second opinion - you know your child best!
Good luck!
