How do you entertain a 12 week old?

DS gets up around 7am and, as he is increasingly awake during the day, it is becoming more and more difficult to entertain him. I've bought all the usual play mats, books, swings, rattles etc but he only lasts 15 minutes or so max before he gets bored and I have to move him to something else. I try to move him from room to room throughout the day so that he has a change in environment but still worry that he is bored. We go out in the pram and he has a good look around but then usually falls asleep. Is there anything else I should be doing?

The thing that really interests babies at this age is you - interacting with you is far more interesting to him than any inanimate object. Even the very expensive supposedly-interactive toys are no substitute.

Let him watch while you do things, and talk to him about what you're doing (or anything really!). He will get interested in toys later, but they don't have much appeal at this stage. And when he does get interested in "things" they will just as likely be a cardboard box, or a wooden spoon, as the things you buy for him, so don't go overboard buying stuff.

Getting out every day is good - fresh air and daylight are good things. But yes, falling asleep from the movement of the pram is the usual reaction.

Get a sling, and then he can be with you as you do stuff - at that age, just you chatting about hanging the washing up/ chopping veg/ doing shopping is the most excitement they can have.

Agree with sling, facing in and out for variety!

They don't need toys to keep them amused at this age. The environment and human interaction is fascinating enough

Have him in the Baby Bjorn constantly but facing in - at what age can you turn them out? He looks fascinated but falls asleep pretty quickly. When do they start holding things?

hi there

If babe is only 12 weeks hthey love watching you do things like making a rattle shake, not yet interested in toys, try singing songs, they love to hear you singing songs. Guide your babe's fingers over soft textures like stuffed animals, tickle and kiss babys tummy and feet. THese things help your baby learn how to interact for fun. Ideally thats what play is all about. Good luck

What about getting a Bumbo, my DD loves hers and she sits watching me wash up, do housework etc quite happily and it develops muscles and stuff.
