Specialist school, he's in a class of 11 kids and 5 adults so it's speech therapy interventions throughout the day, they do attention autism most days as a group, turn taking activities to work on attention and every activity has symbols 1:1 for maths and English specifically to match each childs ability and all have personalized sensory diets throughout the day. They do cooking at least once a week and community trips to the supermarket, we couldn't get him to crack zips or doing the velcro on his shoes but their OT skills had him figure it out.

They have a SALT they can call in if needed, but their all fluent in makaton and trained in multiple AAC forms as a full on total communication environment (think everywhere covered in symbols and the staff randomly break into makaton when having verbal conversations with parents as it's second nature) Genuinely some of the school staff seem to have a better idea than some of the NHS staff I ve met so its not been a concern they don't always have one available. It's only really independent schools that might always have a SALT on site but if the school staff are well trained it won't matter really. Same for OT and physio.

Thanks for the detailed response - the school seems very hands on which is amazing. Is that a specialist state school or a private school funded via your EHCP? Are you able to share (via direct message) the name of the school if you happen to be in south east of England by any chance?

From a long term perspective, do you see DC becoming fully autonomous on a day to day basis? (As that’s what I worry the most eventually)

State specialist, I m afraid I m in the North West.
Honestly no we don't, as independent as possible with a lot of supervision if not 24/7, but living alone no.

Thanks for the honest response - I sincerely do hope that things improve eventually and you look back at this time thinking of yourself as silly for thinking this way (I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way at all, really!)

My son has an EHCP, only had a handful of words until very recently (7 years old) and now he is talking in sentences, making requests and asking very basic questions eg where his brother is. He can also read (though still lacking comprehension but that can come) write and do basic Maths. These skills all started emerging around 6/7 years old.
