Any tips getting a 14 mth old to sleep past 4.30?

He goes to bed at 6.30pm and sleeps through but wont sleep past 4.30am! It's not enough sleep for him as he is getting up tired and grouchy until his first nap - which he wants just before the school run which isn't possible. This morning it was 3.30am but I managed to get him to sleep for another half hour.

He has blackout curtains and his room is nice and dark, quiet, good temp etc. It's not his teeth, nappy etc and even if I feed him he wont go back to sleep. Just Stands up babbling for a bit then screeeeeching to get up.

Any help appreciated! We have a very tired and crotchety mummy and baby at the mo!

one weekend we left ds2 15mths he was happy and chatty then after 40 mins he moaned briefly and went back to sleep. Since then no early waking!

I have a 14 month old too

We had exactly this problem this morning. I would say leave him. I gave dd milk, then more milk! She did seems hungry - but even then she wanted to just get up. By 5am I had had enough and just left her. She cried herself back to sleep for about 15 mins. Tonight I will just give her a drink and leave her to cry it out. It's just so exhausting.

Wait three months! Seriously - time was the only thing that worked for us.

Obviously if you choose to give him toys so he can quietly play (personally I don't give a monkeys if DD is waking up early so long as she plays quietly), and we did find that some low key 'too early, back to bed' reassurance and then legging it did work a bit but it took ages, we moved five minutes every three days till we got her to 5am but she still wakes up at ten to six every day and she's now 20 months

Oh and it might help to know that all these mummies who say this is not normal are probably just ignoring their little darlings dawn squarking!

posieflump · 18/06/2008 07:04

could you give him a beaker of milk and then sneak off back to bed?

I give him a feed first meant to say, he is still breastfed.

My DD did this about the same age, maybe a bit later. I used to go in, lie her down again, tell her it was sleepies time, put back in dummy and leave. Yes she did screech a bit but was ignored. Stopped after a few nights.

I'm having the same problem with my two (14 months and 2.5 years). They're generally both awake around 5 am and whichever one wakes up first usually ends up waking the other up too. am planning to get the bunny alarm clock to try with my 2.5 year old but obviously the little one is too young for that yet.

We have gradually learnt to live with it now...am hoping once dd starts preschool she may start sleeping in a bit later...

Hi everyone
I do put some toys and books in his cot and he quite happily plays with them for 15 - 20 mins. I still feed him myself too which used to signal sleepy time but not any more!!! I think I will just leave him for a bit tomorrow then and see how it goes - my poor neighbour

You say 3 mnths WMMC -Do you think maybe it's just a summer thing?

hi, have you thought about his day time sleep? also his bed-time? 6.30 is quite early to go to bed. i put my 14 month old to bed around 7.30 pm, and he is up (or at least I first hear him around 6.15 am - am sure he is awake well before!). anyway, try to play around with his day-time sleep. reduce it? or increase it a little so that your baby can go down a bit later in the evening? also, are you sure he is getting enough to eat / drink before bed? i have found the the few times that my baby has woken up before 6 am, he was genuinely really hungry and screamed for his bottle. good luck! but whatever happens, it WILL pass!!!!

6.30 is early for bedtime, how about aiming for 8? bearing in mind it might take a week to see results in the morning
