4 year old won’t walk

my DS age 4, is autistic. He is refusing to walk to/ from school and will stop still and have a tantrum (which of course invites dirty looks and judgemental staring) until I pick him up. Which is becoming quickly increasingly more difficult and now I’ve been left with a bad back. He’s outgrown his pushchair/ stroller. Won’t use a scooter nor bike. I don’t drive and it’s a 15/20 walk either way.
any advice would be very appreciated.
ive tried wagons and bike trailers but he will just get in for a second then get out and demand to be carried.
i would love to be able to just wait it out but 1) I like in England and it rains constantly and 2) I have endometriosis and ibs so need to get home fairly quickly in case of a flare up.

love from a worn out, in pain, tired mum.

You might be able to get charity grant for a disability buggy like an Excel elise, you can buy strong chest harnesses for them so they ll be unable to get out of the straps. Have you self referred to physio with your GP on the off chance they might be able to do something for the back pain too?

As above... a second hand Maclaren Major buggy (just like a standard one but much bigger for special needs) is ideal...and you can get extra harnesses to prevent escaping.
I had one for my son, and lots of children at the special school I just retired from, come to school in them.
