Obsessions/interests in a 2 year old

DS is obsessed with certain things - is this usual toddler behaviour?

He is 2 and has had a meltdown each night this week as we have left nursery, as he wants to play with the fan and/or the CD player

before we go to nursery in the mornings, he asks for the fan or the music

he is also very keen on ONE song we have on DVD and will continually ask for it (we must have watched it a hundred times)

we have to tell him the DVD is "sleeping" or broken or would be have to have it on a loop each night (it is a Bruce Sprinsteen song)

this has been going on for months now

i think writing this down now, i will get lots of posts saying it is normal, but it is not so much worrying me as i can't placate him when he is tantrumming

I think it is normal but also a window to a developing personality.
Many of us have times when we fix on something - a favourite song or item of clothing etc that give us a good feeling or reassurance in some way. I think thats a big part of it too.

My son wants to hear me sing the same song 20 or so times every day - and only today I heard him in the stroller singing it himself. He was learning it. I think that repetition has a lot to do with learning too.

Try not to worry. And I think maybe you should let him have the song, its not going to hurt him or you.

I think it's normal tbh my dd21m is quite obssessive about things being "just so". If I make daddy tea it has to be in "daddys" cup for example, and the other day I put dhs coat on to sit outside and she started screaming "daddy daddy!" trying to take it from me so he could wear it.

We all HAVE to take our coats off as soon as we get in and she's completely preoccupied with a certain pair of shoes to the extent I think I'll have to hide them!

Also has to have clean hands if she's got muck on them or a hair stuck to them she walks round holding them in front of her saying "uh-oh" until we clean them!!

Don't have nay great tactics to manage it though I'm afraid

I have watched Finding Nemo about 8.34 million times, for the very same reasons!

I think when they're that age, knowing what comes next (from repetition of a favourite thing) gives them some feeling of control. They don't have much control over busy days when they're toddlers, so anything can help them to feel 'power' - lining toys up in a particular way, doing things in the same order, etc.

My DS has four tshirts of the same design and three pairs of the same trousers as they are all he will wear at the moment! All in the same spectrum of having some control over their lives. Bless!

Oh dear lord the Barney video, that has been hidden behind the TV,hopefully for ever more.

Yes, they definitely learn by repetition, completely normal, but its hard to adjust to toddler mind-set.

ha ha my dd is 2 on sunday and did her first tantrum in Tesco today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am 35wks pg so have not really got the energy for it...
