When did you stop using just cotton wool and water when changing DCs nappy?

Just wondering, as my DS is 8 months now, and because he's had quite dry sensitive skin I still clean him with cotton wool and water, no baby wipes, when I'm changing his nappy.

But now that we're weaning his nappies are becoming more disgusting so I'm thinking it might be easier and quicker to start using baby wipes. Also, he's started crawling so nappy changing time has become very challenging, because he just tries to roll over and get away!

I I stopped when we were out and about more and it was just easier. I try to use cotton wool when we're at home - but definitely wipes if there is a mahoosive poo clearup!

Dd has sensitive skin but only Johnsons fragranced ones have had a bad reaction - i just stick to unperfumed. The Kirkland ones that you get in Costco are sturdy and don't seem to irritate

DD about 6 weeks
DS the day I left hospital, 2 days old

SoupKitchen · 14/06/2008 10:26

DS has eczema but has never reacted to simple wipes

CarGirl · 14/06/2008 10:29

My dds got nappy rash with wipes so after I had finished using the wipes I used to give a final wipe down with water and cotton wool but just wipes whilst out and about was fine, but not if I used them all nappy changes without do the final clean with water. HTH

MrsBadger · 14/06/2008 10:51

DD doesn't have eczema and Simple wipes made her red and sore

we use flannels and water, but that's because we do washable nappies. Kitchen roll + water is better than cotton wool for awful sticky poo.

wotulookinat · 14/06/2008 10:55

We started using baby wipes at about a month old. Simple mad Ds's bottom a bit sore, but all the others have been fine. I prefer Pampers, myself, as I find Huggies a bit thick.

Egg · 14/06/2008 11:03

With DS1 he was about 3 months. With DTs I started using wipes at about 1 month for poos and was fully using wipes by about 2 months. My poor DH did not realise though and carried on using cotton wool and water for another month or so as he feared I would berate him.

Only use Pampers Sensitive as find any others have various things I don't like (smell, too thick, too wet, cause rash etc). You can get a pack of 6 Pampers Sensitive at Tesco for £6 at the mo, far better than the usual £2.50 per pack.

BlueDragonfly · 14/06/2008 11:06

i stopped using cotton wool and water the day i came home from hosp with ds1!

Seona1973 · 14/06/2008 11:33

I used wipes in the hospital with my lo's. I did use cotton wool and water sometimes in the house but wipes were easier and did a better job. I like pampers and most of the supermarket own make sensitive wipes e.g. asda, tesco (normally 3 for £3), morrisons sensitive gel wipes, etc. Boots also do a lot of BOGOF on their own wipes.

Never used cotton wool and water.
Why would you?

CarGirl · 14/06/2008 11:38

Have you seen what baby wipes can clean off clothes, doors, tables etc, have you never wondered what's in them to achieve that?

If your dc don't have sensitive skin it's probably not an issue but if the do it seems to burn their skin.

Thankyouandgoodnight · 14/06/2008 11:56

we use Huggies Pure - I have stood in various aisles comparing all the ingredients and they are the ones with the least stuff in and are the only ones which don't make my LOs bottom bright red. Even the sensitive ones, organic, earth friendly etc set her off. It says on the pack 'like using cotton wool and water'. They feel like water rather than cream and they're not so good at getting marks off the walls which I consider to be a good thing!

maidamess · 14/06/2008 11:58

You've doen well to last 8 months! Blimey. I was on wipes on day one.

micci25 · 14/06/2008 12:02

the day i left hospital. i use sensative wipes and have never had a problem, she does get the occassional nappy rash but all babies do.

Lazycow · 14/06/2008 13:28

I started after about 2-3 weeks I think !

layda · 14/06/2008 13:32

We always use tissues and water at home and find it easy.
natural brand of nappy wipes when we are out. There is some seriously nasty crap in commercial nappy wipes

FruitynNutty · 14/06/2008 13:35

I used wipes the day we came home from hospital and DS has never ever had nappy rash. Hes now out of nappies.

tassisssss · 14/06/2008 13:35

i use baby lotion and washable fleece wipes with dd who's 9 days old

used cotton wool and lotion with my ds until he was about 15 months then switched to face cloths and water

too many baby wipes caused my wee ones skin to react (plus they're expensive) so I save them for out and about.

Mercy · 14/06/2008 13:35

When I weaned them - as you say, the contents change then and cotton wool doesn't really do the job!

weeglenny · 14/06/2008 14:03

Thanks everyone for the replies - I'll have a look at Pampers and Huggies ones when I'm next at the supermarket and see about trying some - anything for an easier life
