Ds will be 1 soon, what type of books are good for that age?

I want to buy ds some books to read to him at night time.

I know that if he gets the books he will tear the pages and I know you can get those books with all the pages are harder but they do not have much of a story to them.

Would you just buy normal story books to read?

Thanks, and are the stories long enough?

All the hard books i have seen so far have very little words and i want to read proper stories.

you can get board books that have longer stories and bigger in size the small board books seem to have shorter stories

you could look on e bay for board books

i had a really good second hand bookshop near me that had lots of books but not sure where they are now if i find them will let you know you can have them ds is 3 and dont need them

I love Peace at Last by Jill murphy and you can get a board version of it.

You can start by just reading the pictures IYKWIM. There's quite a lot of story there, but it's all based on sounds so catches their imaginations.

Another classic is Oh Dear by Rod Campbell and others by him in the Bexter series.

tassisssss · 13/06/2008 18:57

sorry, Buster not Bexter!

they do a board book version of The Hungry Caterpillar

it is great

The series of "that's not my (train/pony) etc are all lovely for this age

Meandmyjoe · 13/06/2008 19:21

Aww my son loves his cardboard hungry catapillar book. He is 10 months and spends ages putting his chubby litle fingers through the holes!

There are loads of fab baby books at Babies r Us, the really chunky cardboard ones are good.

Also, The Works sell some good waterproof squidgey plastic ones (mine's called 'Frog on a Log') but there are many in the series which are good if your lo chews and sucks everything.

FeelingEvil · 13/06/2008 19:37

there's a board book version of the gruffalo - great story.

you can test drive some by borrowing from library before parting with money

When my dd was 1 she had a low down shelf for books it was ok to touch by herself cloth and board books and a high up one for sharing with an adult. This all went pear-shaped when she reached 2 and realised by climbing on her story chair she could reach the 'with an adult' ones. Luckily by this age she had got the idea of how to treat books. So it was ok!!!

So,so,so... mummyrayjay.... I second all the books already mentioned. But my number one must buy is Hug by Jez Alborough it is a delight to read together and babies/toddlers quickly join in as there are so few words to learn "hug" "mummy" "Bobo"! We have it in paper book form but it also comes in board book and even in a set with a toy "Bobo"!!!! How fab is that???

Also DK do nice baby non-fiction books and the "that's not my...." range which are both nice for little ones to read alone or with an adult too.

Hope this is of some help. Happy reading!

mummyrayjay · 13/06/2008 19:53

teafortwo - thanks for recommending Hug, ds can not say mummy yet so maybe reading this one will help..

Board books definitely, owl babies is a nice story. Agree, they have to be good for chewing on!

MingMingtheWonderPet · 13/06/2008 21:59

Dear Zoo is lovely

'That's not my ....' range

Spot the Dog books

teafortwo · 13/06/2008 23:03

Mummyrayjay - If we want a cuddle from dd we say " aaaaarrrr Bobo" and she says "aaaaar Mummy/Daddy" and "hudg" because she can't say "hug" very well and gives us a big hug.

Hey promise to let us know the books you buy and which ones your little likes and which ones he really loves!!!

Twinklemegan · 13/06/2008 23:10

Lift the flap books are great from about that age. Also try to find some books with real photographs in, not just drawings. DS has two board books with photos of animals in them and he loved looking at them from around 6 months old.

mummyrayjay · 14/06/2008 18:27

teafor two - i will let you know
