9m failed ASQ miserably - should I be concerned

I have had concerns with LO development since a few months old (I am sure you’ll see my posts /comments on this page!). So much so the HV agreed to come out and visit and review, they sent ASQ 8m (goes up to 8m 30d) - LO is 9m now. I knew there would be greys and blacks for development but when I saw in real life it saddened me And just confirmed / validated my concerns.

LO was grey in all areas apart from black in communication. HV said nothing they can do at present (I.e referrals) as too young for communication therapy. In terms of motor skills LO is already under physio so not much more can do with that either apart from persist there.

any way, sorry for rambling, my question is was anyone else’s LO behind on everything or in more than 2 areas but eventually caught up and was all ok :(? Were referrals needed to push them along if so or did they catch up on their own? Or did they end up with some diagnosed down the line?

Had all greys and blacks in asq's between 18 months and 2 except one area for my son, honestly I think I may have messed up the 1 year check questionnaire so it didn't flag anything when it should have.
He did get an autism diagnosis and we do suspect a moderate learning disability too, but equally I know of toddlers that didn't end up needing interventions with similar asq's and did just catch up eventually , so I think especially at 9 months it really could be either way.

What I can say is that you can really teach yourself any sort of early intervention techniques without any professional help or referrals yet, for communication speech and language UK has excellent advice on their website for example. Also children's centres have loads of free groups for children's development.

My HV was rubbish so I m sorry that yours hasn't sign posted you to anything even though referrals aren't possible at this point.

@1995SENNDMUM Yes from all my research feel like it could go either way.

What area/s was he not grey / black in? What level would you say he is for ASD?

im so confused, I’ve seen somewhere someone mention about the “baby navigator” site and how good it is… and they advise on SoCo (social and communication) delays based on loads of questions, and after I had answered them it said my LO wasn’t delayed for his age at present… CONFUSED.COM. Whereas he’s black in ASQ. Suppose ASQ is government based so should take that more serious than the other site.

yes I am going to follow up again with them in 4w and keep pestering until they help.

Are you in the UK @WorriedMama2025? If so, I’d stick to the two Ages & Stages.

This simple communication progress checker is from a well respected UK charity. How does he score on that one?

His gross motor skills weren't in the grey or the black at all, still aren't at 5 years old even. He's on the severe end of the spectrum.

I put a lot of effort into getting him referrals sorted as soon as they would let me do it, it's incredibly postcode lottery situation with the NHS but for the most part it's all been assessments and "parent training" from them rather than proper actual therapy they gave him themselves, so a lot of what I know is self taught really until he got to his sen school.

The portage or early years team with your council might help younger ages than other teams do so have a look for their criteria online if you can find it.

@SleafordSods - I am indeed … did the link and it says “From your answers, it may be that your child needs more support with understanding, social communication.” X

@1995SENNDMUM oh bless you! It does sound like it is a postcode lottery from all that I’ve read! Will look into it thank you! X
