4 Year Old Behaviour

I have a 4 YO boy and recently his behaviour has been bad. I’ve already had a meeting with nursery and the EYP regarding this and he seemed to have been doing better but over the holidays it’s getting horrendous. He tells me there’s a voice in his head which makes him angry and says mean things to him, if he wants food and I tell him to wait 5 minutes he starts hitting me, kicking me, pulling my hair, standing on my throat if I lay down (I had a back operation) trying to bite. It’s the same if he’s trying to build something and it doesn’t work or we tell him to put toys away before other toys come out- the same behaviors displayed, he’s recently started counting to 12 to calm himself down but it’s not always done. We do praise good behaviour, I give him chocolate, applause him and give stickers. He’s a very hyperactive boy and very clever with Lego. Just wondering if anyone’s had similar experiences?

It sounds very difficult and as though he is struggling with Nursery and self regulation generally.

Have you requested an EHC assessment yet? IPSEA have model letters you can use. If you’ve not done that, I would do ot this week as it sounds as though he’s going to need an ECHP moving forward.

Is he just 4? How does he score on this simple progress checker?

I’m from the UK so not sure about the assessment but me and my mum have said we think he has ADHD as his dad has been told he has it and they’re very similar. He does have a stammer and we are on waiting list for Speech & Language as part of that is his frustration. The checker says about needing help with his speech and me and nursery have pointed out he swaps letters around so he says “aminal” instead of “animal” but as well his behaviour is if I tell him to wait or if he can’t do something but seems to be worse after the holidays

If he’s already been referred for SaLT, has he also been referred for a hearing test? The Speech and Language Therapist will want him to have had a hearing test before they see him to rule out Glue Ear.
