12 month old not moving/crawling/bearing weight etc.

Hiya, looking for some advice/reassurance.

My 12 month old isn't bearing any weight, not crawling/walking or pulling to stand. She can sit really well unaided but shows no interest whatsoever in moving - she basically just sits happily. She can't get from lying to sitting either.

I'll put her toys out of her reach and she's not really bothered, she'll lean over to get them and if it's too far then she just gives up and isn't even bothered!

We've been referred to physio as she scored very low on her gross motor section of the ASQ questionnaires but they won't even acknowledge the referral for another 8 weeks until we complete an 8 week program of basically all the things I've already tried!

Just wondering if anyone has experienced similar or has any ideas on how to get her to start moving?

Thank you :)

I’ve not experienced it sorry @PomPoms24xbut I was just wondering of the GP has checked her hips?

wishIwasonholiday10 · 21/12/2025 13:24

We had a similar situation but it was a long road to getting any help or diagnosis, for example I couldn’t even get a physio referral until 18 months. She might just be taking her time or focusing on other areas of development or she might have something like hypermobility or hypotonia which my daughter has (which is only a symptom rather than an actual diagnosis which we are still trying to get). Agree it’s worth getting a GP check too although mine was pretty dismissive.

PomPoms24x · 22/12/2025 07:10

Thank you - I did take her to the GP and she was checked and basically said there was nothing wrong with her, but I wasn't overly convinced so I think I'll go back.

Sorry you've had a rubbish time of trying to get a diagnosis @wishIwasonholiday10 - did you find the physio helped?

Did the GP spend time examining her hips @PomPoms24x?

Has she had her 12 month check recently and if so, how did she score for Gross Motor Skills?

Yes, I do think the physio helped although they mostly just tell you what to work on at home. It was the physio that noticed she had low muscle tone (hypotonia) whereas the GP had also told us nothing was wrong. The physio also referred us to the community paediatrician who is the gatekeeper for further tests. My daughter would definitely have benefited from earlier physio. She started but shuffling at 14 months but didn’t really make any progress towards walking until 2 years. She never crawled but did eventually walk independently at 2.5 years but is still very behind with her gross motor skills.

PomPoms24x · 23/12/2025 08:09

@SleafordSods she did examine her hips, but I might go back for a second opinion. She scored very low on gross motor, hence the referral to physio :( HV thought she might have hypermobility but not sure!

I'm glad the physio was helpful @wishIwasonholiday10 - sorry it took such a long time to get support though, typical that the GP didn't notice anything..! I hope she is doing okay now :)

Shes doing great and making progress all the time but is still very behind other kids her age for gross motor and a bit behind for fine motor. We are still awaiting some genetic tests and MRI to determine if there is a cause for the hypotonia.

12 months is still very early and your little one might yet catch up. My sister didn’t walk until 18 months and there was nothing wrong with her at all so late walking can still be normal.

Yes i would go back and ask them to check again. If she scored in the Blavk for gross motor skills i would also request a referral to a Paediatrician.

PomPoms24x · 29/12/2025 07:53

@SleafordSods thank you, I've booked a GP appointment in 2 weeks time.

@wishIwasonholiday10 I'm glad she's making progress:)
Thank you, I've got a GP appointment in 2 weeks and she is starting nursery soon so I'll keep monitoring it.

Mine was (is) v late on gross motor. She is hypermobile. I'd recommend a private physio assessment while you wait for the nhs if you can afford it - it shouldnt cost that much. If youre based in london i can send a recommendation.

how are your little ones getting on? We’ve just had first physio appointment for low muscle tone and been referred for paediatrician review. Likelihood of needing blood tests etc. Quite nervous about it all, my ds seems to be hitting other ASQ3 so seems to be fine with social and cognitive skills but hard to tell at 13m.
anything you would recommend querying paediatrician about ?

TinyMouseTheatre · 28/03/2026 13:16

What kind of blood tests are they suggesting @Pcosdegallo? Are they offering genetic testing?

And if most of the ASQ3 is fine, have you been asked to complete the Social & Emotional ASQ?

My daughter is doing well although we still don’t have any answers. Her MRI and first round of genetic testing has been normal although they are doing one more round of broader genetic testing. She doesn’t appear to have any cognitive delay but is notably delayed in her gross motor skills eg still struggles stairs at 3yr 8m. I’m nervous about her starting school this year.

Pcosdegallo · 01/04/2026 18:36

@TinyMouseTheatrethey said it was basic blood tests (liver function, thyroid, ck etc) and genetic testing which would include things like fragile x. So I am assuming this is the micro array possibly?

Paed thinks that it’s isolated gross motor delay and not global at this point which I guess is one good takeaway.

I have a feeling they’re looking at neuromuscular route without telling us as much. He’s also hypermobile.

@wishIwasonholiday10thats positive that your little girls tests came back clear - did they say what they try to focus on with the wider panel and how long it takes ? Have certain scarier conditions ruled themselves out now?

The tests we have had have already ruled out lots of scary stuff. The final one is a broader paediatric disorders panel and could take a year to come back. The blood tests and microarray are fairly standard and were our first step too and all normal. We then saw genetics who ordered the WGS tests and also neurology. It seems to be pretty much an isolated gross motor delay (and fine motor to some extent) in our case too. My greatest fear was something progressive but no signs of that at the moment.
