Hi all,
My three year old little boy has recently become incredibly sensitive to noise. But the list of what he’s scared off is increasing by the day. He always hated the hand dryer, but recently it’s anything loud - the kettle, the shower, he’s also covering his ears watching TV. He also does it going in to very crowded areas eg soft play until he settles then he’s fine.
Hes got no other signs of autism or sensory processing issues. His speech and understanding of speech is excellent, his interaction with other children etc is great, he has no major behavioural issues beyond the norm for three year olds. He’s in full time pre school which I think may be triggering it a bit as all these changes started with that move. Pre school have said they think it may be attention seeking but as it develops more I’m not so sure.
he had an ear infection a few weeks ago and doctors think he might associate noise with sore ears now, even though his ears are clear (apart from some wax over one eardrum). He’s been referred for a hearing test in the mean time to double check everything.
I just have no idea what to do, reluctant to use ear defenders as the noise adversion appears to be selective and anticipatory - he literally picks and chooses what he wants to cover his ears for. He also is very crafty and will cover his ears if for example we want to watch something he doesn’t want to watch eg a Christmas movie over Disney cars.
the same kid belted out Christmas carols with twenty other kids from the top of his lungs last week for his pre school concert. He loves music in the car.
He’s always been a bit funny watching tv, we limit it loads but he loves c beebies. He grunts watching, becomes overstimulated etc. He also humped his teddy loads from 18 months to just recently, pretty much stopped now unless exhausted.
is this just something he’ll grow out of?
