Why does my 15mo cry and want to be picked up so much?

It's getting absurd. And it's me he comes to, not daddy. He's also been a headbanger for a while which i ignored, but he's stared genuinely hurting himself to make himself cry because he knows i'll pick him up. He whacked his head against the metal bannisters today and has two bruise lines down the sides of his face. And plenty of other bruises and cuts from the last few days half of which are self inflicted.

my 14 month old is a real mummy's girl and loves being carried everywhere, unless that is she spots the front door open, in which case she is quite happy to run as fast as her little legs will carry her towards freedom. and when stopped, throws herself onto the floor in despair. is quite cute. think it's an age/frustration thing

I watched something somewhere that said you should be headbangers on a beanbag or something and sit with them till they get over the tantrum.

Sorry I can't help with why.

Can you distract him as soon as he looks like he is about to do himself some damage or cry?
Quickly start talking about something else or getting out a story or tickling him to get him out of that mood?

mine does that too morocco!
Bluejelly - trouble is, he's just started doing it when my back's turned, but i know it's deliberate.
He'll also howl if he's put down and immediately do sth to hurt himself. Toddlers and self-harm!???!
