7 month old left hand preference

Hi all,
I have noticed that my 7 month old has a very obvious left hand preference. He will use his right arm/ hand but if I put something in his right he will pass it to his left.
He has met all other milestones but is reluctant to use his left arm/ hand.
I have an appointment with the paediatrician next week but I made the mistake of googling and am now worrying about Cerebral Palsy.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I would love to hear some positive outcomes

I had 2 like this, they're both left handed. Hopefully just a literal left handed preference. I think there would be many other clear signs of cerebral palsy as well. Good luck, I hope your appointment puts you at ease.

Are you worried about them being left handed as it sounds like they are left handed. A childhood of smudged handwriting awaits. Sinistra.

Thank you I’m hoping that’s the same situation for me. He definitely seems to be reluctant to move/ use his right hand and open it up but hopefully that’ll come with practice.

Absolutely not. I’m hoping that’s all it’ll be. The GP told me there shouldn’t be this much of a hand preference at such a young age that’s what’s concerned me along with making the mistake of googling!

My girly had very obvious right hand preference from only a few weeks old. She moved both arms fine, but starting thumb sucking at 6 weeks and has only ever done it with her right. She also would only look to her right/lay with her head on her right side for weeks but has stopped that now. The doctor said it was the way she was facing in the womb.

She’s 7 months old now and the right hand preference is much less distinct (although she still only sucks right thumby), but I was surprised as I thought they weren’t meant to have preferences this early. CP did cross my mind early on, but it’s clear she doesn’t have it now.

im glad your little girl has improved. My little boy is still only really using his left hand although can reach out and hold things with his right he just precedes to use his left. I’m concerned it’ll slow him down with crawling but I’m hoping with time he will get stronger and improve

I think with such a clear preference, reaching the level of 'reluctance to use the right side', you're wise to get him reviewed. It may be nothing (some people are just very left/right-handed), it may be something that would benefit from a bit of physio, or it may be something that requires more significant treatment. Whichever it is, best to know early.

I knew DD1 was left-handed and DD2 right-handed by six months, but those of were much more subtle preferences – maybe a 60/40 split between preferred/non-preferred hand.
