6 week old very unsettled

FTM and wondering, does the below sound normal for a EBF 6 week old (been told crying etc peaks around this time) or could it be down to something else? I’ve been reading lots and I am thinking of cutting out dairy. At bedtime she goes down fine and is no problem through the night, it’s just during the day and evening. She is gaining weight ok which is why I haven’t been to the doctors yet. Hoping someone has been through similar and has an answer. Please be nice :)

  • Tummy rumbles a lot
  • Fine one minute then inconsolable crying out of nowhere
  • Constant spit ups, small amounts but regular
  • Cry’s when pooing, seems to have to really push it out and then it’s quite explosive and runny, has small amount of mucous in it, not really seedy
  • Feeds well for about 5-10 mins then goes very fussy, crying and pulling away and doesn’t want to continue
  • Won’t nap through the day, even contact naps don’t work.
  • Doesn’t like going in the sling (didn’t mind when she was younger), takes about 10 mins of rocking to stop crying in there and then she gives in to it and will sleep for up to 2 hours
  • Bad baby acne on face and ears
  • Sounds congested

Has she been checked for Tongue Tie @LJAM2025?

LJAM2025 · 14/11/2025 20:18

@SleafordSods hi, yes she has been checked. I think it’s her lazy latch and swallowing air… I’m going to try be more vigilant on making sure she latches properly…

So glad she’s been checked. Unfortunately though many HCPs aren’t properly trained to spot a tie. Does your LO have many if the symptoms in the article?

Could well be as you said, her latch, a bad or lazy latch will mean she takes in air and that leads to lots of gas and discomfort, have you been to a breastfeeding clinic and had any one check the latch ? I didn’t realise ours wasn’t right until i went but to be honest, my second baby absolutely hated feeding at the breast once she had the ease of expressed milk in a bottle. I wouldn’t worry about the spots, newborn spots are normal and also the spit up is normal, happened with my first, unless it’s a projectile amount.

I also think gas in newborns whether they are bottle or breastfed is totally normal, it’s just a learning curve, imagine being in the womb and then learning a whole new way of feeding, it will all even out.

You're doing a great job, reach out to a lactation consultant if you can, speak to your HV as they may be able to refer you
