Does mmr cause long term behavioural change?

my dd is about 2 turn 2 and (finally) had the mmr almost 2 weeks ago. since then we have had the expected reactions, temp at night and a mild rash (around her mouth??) but also (and i'm only assumin this is linked and not co-incidence) a chane in her behaviour. my usually happy little angel has become a sad little thing. lots of crying and some irritating whingeing and a few unhappy pitiful tantrums. are these all connected to the jab (nothing i've read supports this) or is it just a devt thing? i m so worried that she will be sad like this long term. if it is mmr, how long might these symptoms last, i am really worried that she is like this forever.....

the strong liklihood is that she is just feeling very poorly still. Some children have more side effects than others.
Keep an eye on her. If you continue to notice any other changes or concerns in behaviour or food choices etc then go to your GP.

My DD got a bad ear infection after mmr take her to the doctor and check ears

booboobunny · 04/06/2008 18:23

oh she has been complaining on and off about her ear hurting but i sort of put it down to teething. have spoken to out of hours doctors and they pretty much dismissed any link in high to mmr?

they will always disregard a link to the MMR. It is like a knee jerk thing. My niece had the MMR and instantly started to fit. Even as they were attending her the nurse was telling my brother "its nothing to do with the jab" .
I think they are just very wary. You know your baby and you want treatment rather than causation. If you are concerned go and see the GP

I think she's probably just feelign really unwell, get her ear checked

I think having vaccinations can lower your resistance to other bugs to be honest

she won't be sad forever just till the ill feeling goes

Is she pooing normally? If so I suspect she's just - as the others have suggested- feeling poorly and it will pass. If her bowel movements have changed then I will stick my neck out and say that behavioural changes could be related (and it might be a time to give probiotcs/perhaps temporarily cut down on potential foood triggers etc).

Most likely she's just feeling grotty though. Which is a good sign. It does show the vaccinations are likely to have given good immunity.

well shes pooing regularly but it has been like teething poo - a bit on the ooey gooey side. hadn't thought that the worse she feels the better the vacc. it's a silver lining of sorts but seeing her so unhappy without being able to articulate what is making her so is just heartbreaking....

My dd was like this for three weeks one week after her MMR. No coincidence, I don't think so. That's why I'm in no hurry to get DS vaccinated

annoyingdevil · 05/06/2008 13:19

Oh and the GP denied that it had any connection with the MMR

NotABanana · 05/06/2008 13:21

I would take her to the GP and demand they prove it isn't linked to the MMR jab. They will always deny any link.

You can self report reactions here

booboobunny as her poo has changed a bit I'd be a little careful for the next few weeks. Cut down on dairy and gluten (I don't mean take it out- just make sure she eats plenty of other foodstuffs as well so she carries on eating widely until the poo goes back to normal). A little probiotic might help as well. And if you can get it into her cod liver oil (for the vitamin A- great for measles).

Definitely good to see some reaction- especially with the MMR as it shows the live viruses are up to something and the body is dealing with that iyswim.

well to update i actually took her to the docs today as i was just getting more worried. this pm we went for a walk and she fell asleep in the buggy, when she woke up i was in the coffee shop, but rather than spend half and hour singing 'i want to come out' and then attempting to escape/'have a run' she stared into the side of the buggy for 20 mins and then closed her eyes and went back to sleep. totally out of character and she'd already slept for about an hour.
doc was brilliant, found mild redness in both ears and a throat infection which he said were most likely brought through by the mmr. upshot is that she now has appropriate medicine and i feel better than i have done in quite a while.
bad news is i got home to find someone had ripped the front of my car off and left it in my front garden (they did leave contact details tho). and us off on our holibobs next week and all.....ho hum just goes to show you can't have everything!
