Is 15mo too early to tell if DS is left-handed?

He shows a preference for holding forks, spoons etc in his left hand and using it to play with toys. Just wondering if it's too early for left-handedness to show and if I ought to encourage him to use the left hand when eating, playing with crayons etc or just let him work it out for himself?

My DS2 aged 5 appears to be left handed we also noticed that at the crown of his head the hairs go in a different direction to the rest of the family who are all right handed.

I don't know if its related but he has a natural tendency to want to count from right to left.

I'd be interested to know from older left handers if they are pleased they were forced to use their right hand for some tasks or if they have any recommendations to pass on.

What's all this "eating correctly" business? I think I'm going to have a left handed huff about it!

MegBusset · 05/06/2008 08:46

If DS ever learns to eat correctly with either hand I'll be very happy!

DS has favoured his left hand since he started grasping things. He def uses it now for spoons, pencils, anything that needs a degree of motor skills. Not surprised as DH is the only man his his family not be left-handed, on both his mum's and his dad's side.

Quite so mrsbabookaloo! 'Eating correctly' indeed. What are you lot, Victorians or something?

I'm left-handed and ds1 seems to be heading that way too: at 2.6, he shows a definite preference for his left hand and foot. I write with my left hand, but use scissors with my left and eat correctly right-handed, and I could never for the life of me decided which hand to hold a tennis racquet in, so abandoned that career early on. It'll be interesting to see if ds1 turns out left-handed and if so, whether he'll be more left-handed than me.

ds is 2.7 years and is clearly left handed.
always passes things to his left hand if you put it in his right hand.
he's the only one in the family to be left handed on both sides.
i put it down to the fact that he broke his right arm as a baby and was forced to use his left hand to suck on as comfort instead!

Eating correctly is the acceptable way to eat, my dp eats the wrong way around and I find it childish and uncooth.

dd was left hand dominant from about a year. ds had no strong hand dominance until 4/5
