My child started secondary school last week, fantastic first few days. Then a couple of older children started shouting and swearing at them, flicking water and swinging bottles near their face. Made up a situation saying my child had punched them 5 years ago. Getting their friends to come looking for them.

My child went to leave school and the boys were in front, to scared they did a loop of the school to avoid them. Came home tearful, scared and upset. I've emailed the school who were already aware of the situation. My child doesnt want to go to school on Monday.
On a personal note im so so upset for him! How would you react to this? I dont want to over react but ive emailed his form tutor and will keep them off if this continues. But im scared these boys just want to pick on my child for no reason. The kids are also older then my child. Please help me figure out a course of action.

Sorry to hear that your son is having this sort of trouble so early on into secondary school.

As it's older kids that are causing the issues, it must only be an issue during lunchtime and break time? Obviously home time too.

I think avoid school is not a solution. You should speak to the school and ask where your son can go during break and lunchtime so he's less exposed. There should clubs that he can attend and such.

Does your son have friends that have joined from his primary school?

Meanwhile the school should be trying to identify the older kids and keeping watch or speaking to them.

Yes he has a lot of friends and his older cousin is there to as well as his sister. There is no ryme or reason why these older boys have singled him out, just looking to pick on a younger child.
School have tried to identify the lads but my son was unable to pick them out, not helped by not knowing what year they are in.
I wont be keeping him off school, but if it doesnt get sorted swiftly then yes I will do. 2-4 older boys flicking water, swinging a bottle near his head and shouting and swearing at him, is a hell of a lot for a 11 year old. He's scared to move around the dchool as he doesnt know when he's randomly going to see them.
The thing is he's quite a tough lad and is able to brush quite a bit off, but he's aware thst these boys are older and bigger than him.

Any update on this? How has the last week been?

TickingKey46 · 24/09/2025 11:34

Yes. So my son and I devised a plan, next time he saw the boys he was to ask the nearest teacher their names and year.
Head of year dealt with the boys and there have been no further issues, thank goodness.
