Almost 3 year old - “mark making / drawing”

My little boy is 3 at the end of next month so he’s currently 2y 10m.
he has zero interest in drawing or mark making, always been this way.
but he’s a great talker, loves reading and can memorize stories, great with numbers and shapes but literally cannot get him to mark make. He just scribbles.
he likes when I draw pictures for him eg he’ll say mum draw a circle or a happy face etc but any suggestion that he do it himself results in “no no I can’t do it” “mummy you do it”. He definitely can’t hold a pen or crayon properly, still using a full fist grasp.
is this normal for his age? He doesn’t even copy lines that I make. He just refuses tbh.

I think that’s totally fine. I’m not a native speaker and had to ask my friend what ‚mark making‘ even is when I saw it in last week‘s nursery report.

My first was exactly like this. Could not have been less interested. Look at games and activities to improve fine motor skills but don’t stress too much about it Smile

Ds had no interest in making marks, either writing or drawing. Tbf he's 18yo and he's still only got interest in that if it's on the computer.

What I did find helped with him, was the messages on the Nintendo DSi. His sisters had them and used to sit and write messages to each other. He wanted to join in, and, although it was with a stylus, it is basically the same as a pencil. So he did get some interest in it.

Still tells me there's no point in writing if you can type!

@MargaretThursday thats interesting as I’ve just picked up a leapfrog learning thing for his bday next month which has a stylus attached so that might help his fine motor!
