Hooray! Took away DD's dummy with no problem.

Just thought I'd share as I know that lots of people worry about taking away a dummy.

DD (20 months) has only ever had the dummy in her cot or in the car. About two weeks ago I stopped letting her have it in the car (we had no long trips to do).

On Tuesday night (on a whim) I cut a hole in her dummy. Thought I would just see how she got on. It took her a while to settle but she went to sleep after about 20 mins on her own. I heard her wake in the night but she settled herself back.

She has always had a clip on her grobag so I left it attached as she was used to finding it in the night.

On Friday I just took the dummy away totally at nap time and she's been fine ever since! She has two naps a day and sleeps 12hours at night.

Just thought I'd share as I'm really pleased that she hasn't been at all upset!

we took dd's dummy just afetr xmas so she was around 20mths, went swimmingly, took ds,s dummy at the same time (he stopped at 14-18mths but wanted one after dd arrived or he took hers) and he still asks for it now!! He's fien without it, and they both only had them for naps and bed or when they were ill.... Well done- its so hard when you dotn know how they'll react, its take it young and they dont notice or leave it till 3ish and can understand....

great story

hopefully it'll be as easy for us when the time comes!

DD was almost 2 before we lost the dummy and that was partly because Dh took her up to bed at my mum's house on NYE and dropped it on the way. When he went back to look for it, it had disappeared off the face of the earth and it hasn't been seen since.

She did wake a couple of times for the first week or so, but nothing too terrible.

I'm pleased that it went well for you too. I have worked with some children who become really upset when they realise the dummy is no more and some parents have ended up giving the dummy back as a result. I think it is one of those things you have to be hard about, cruel to be kind, that kind of thing.

It's funny, it was easy with DS as he had chicken pox at 18m and just couldn't have it in his mouth so after a week of that he'd forgotten all about it. I don't know why but I thought it would be a nightmare with DD. She has asked for it a couple of time (signing) but I have just said 'it was broken wasn't it? All gone now.'

I saw another thread earlier where someone was asking whether or not to give one in the first place and lots of people were saying how hard it can be to get rid of so I just wanted to post that it wasn't.

When I think of all the comfort she's had from it I'm please we gave her one, she'd started to suck her thumb so I gave her a dummy. I don't think that the thumb will now go in but I'll have to wait and see....
