11mo leaning to the sides as if looking round a corner - anyone else?

I’ve never seen this behaviour in any other baby so I’m wondering if it’s a sign of something or other.

Essentially, when seated, he will tilt or lean to one side, as if to look round a corner. He’ll do it on both sides. He tilts from his waist, not just his neck.

I would love to hear from just one other person whose similarly-aged baby does or did this?!

No one?! I thought as much…

So he’s doing it with his body and not just looking out of the side of his eyes?

floorpuddles · 29/08/2025 12:43

Yep, it’s from his trunk.

I’ve looked online and it’s definitely not the side ‘peering’ - it’s more like the attached drawing?!

I probably sound over anxious. He isn’t crawling or walking yet but I think he wants to be physically active, so he does this, he bounces up and down on his bum etc.

He’s my only child and I don’t really have anyone to compare him to so I just don’t know what’s ’normal.’

Crawling isn’t really a concern as they’ve removed it from the milestone list recently as it’s not really a reliable indicator of progress.

If he’s not walking, which is perfectly normal at 11 months, is he bearing weight in his legs? So if you hold his hands will he stand and if you put a couple of toys on the sofa for him to look at will he stand there for a moment it or two?

floorpuddles · 29/08/2025 14:04

Yes absolutely. Sometimes after I’ve fed him he wriggles off my lap to stand in between my legs and he seems to like that. He also will stand at the sofa and play with some things. I will be behind him to catch him though. He is also in the early stages of trying to pull up onto the sofa cushion.

He’s just been doing the tilting thing again only this time leaning more from his neck. He can do it to both sides. I just haven’t seen a baby do this before?! He also kicks his legs a lot too and rubs his feet together when he’s sitting.

Hello! I know this in an old post but did it come to anything? My 7month old has been doing exactly this the past week or so. My first did nothing like this.

floorpuddles · 05/01/2026 19:22

Hi @Nascette oh my goodness I’d forgotten all about this! I think he was just learning about his body and exploring how he could move. He doesn’t do it any more (unless he’s playing peekaboo behind his bedroom door!) and I couldn’t tell you when he stopped. He’s 15 months old now and a happy little boy, who is developing on track with everything as far as I know!

What I can say is that, with reflection, I have been - and perhaps to some extent, still am - a very anxious first time mum. Every little thing he does, I would be straight onto Mumsnet or Google or Reddit to find out if it was ‘normal.’ Thankfully these days, I can catch myself doing it a bit more. I had a tricky mat leave for a number of reasons and I think this came out in worrying about my little boy. (I can’t believe I went to the extent of uploading a diagram!)

I don’t know if this might resonate with you too, but I thought I’d mention it just in case. 💐

Thanks! I glad to hear it was nothing! Mine only does it one way and he definitely favoured a head direction as a baby but I can't remember which so I feel like he's stretching it out, like his neck is sore 🤣

And thanks for that, I'm a much less anxious mum now this is my second but I definitely relate with this at times!
