4month DD sleeps well at night but fights sleep during day

Hi was wondering if any one has advice for new mum. My DD is sleeping really well at night. She has a good bedtime routine and will go to sleep awake in her cot by herself with no fuss from 7 to 8pm and will wake at 5.30 to 6.00am for a feed. After this she will go back to sleep for another couple of hours. During the day however she will have only 2 or 3 naps and these only last 1/2 an hour. She really fights these sleeps too and it is really distressing for me to hear her so upset. Im putting her in the cot with her soft toy she has at night, I have tried giving her a dummy but she spits it out - although this will help her fall asleep if she keeps it in or I keep putting it back in, which I dont want to get into a habit of doing! Is fighting sleep something all babies this age do during the day? How long should I leave her crying before going back to her? Will she learn to fall asleep by herself during the day and is there anything I can do to help her?

That sounds entirely normal to me. In fact you are bloody lucky she's sleeping as much as she is. DD never needed more than 9 hours sleep max in 24 at that age. Don't leave her crying. She will learn to sleep more soundly later on.

My DD was exactly the same as this, brilliant sleeper at night, but only 30 min naps during the day.

It did get better over time, she started longer naps eventually and got more used to sleeping during the day in her cot. It is distressing when you know they are tired and need sleep, but are fighting it. I used to try and have one nap a day in the cot, but otherwise would help her sleep by going out in the car or pram.

By the time she was 6 months old, naps were a lot better, and longer.
