My daughter has no interest in Toys! IS THAT UNUSUAL?

My 2 and a half year old daughter, very rarely sits and plays with her toys and uses her imagination. She would play for hours if somebody is with her (adult or child) but if she is left to play alone, she just knocks around the house going from person to person trying to get attention. Obviosly she is by no means spoilt with attention nor ignored (i think we have the balance just right from that side of things) but i feel she should be able to amuse herself when people are busy doing other things, without getting upset or feeling like its a negative thing!? also i dont really like her to watch too much tv, and annoyingly this is the only thing that really captures her attention.

She plays quite well in the garden, so is definitely a more outdoorsy kind of girl.. but sadly the crappy weather is putting a stop to that..

any ideas? interesting toys or game ideas, or if you have had the same situation etc? all advice would be good!

She's totally and completely normal!

You could try making non-toys available for her to amuse herself with (eg clothes pegs or washing up bowl, water and some plastic things that need washing)

You have just described by 3 yr dd. Used to drive me mad but now she is communicating better, it's not as bad as we can at least have a conversation whilst I get on with a few things. Like your dd, she is outdoorsy and will play with sand and her scooter. The only thing she would do on her own to some extent is playdough. Like Califrau, dd2 is champion toy player! dd1 starting to develop interest in a few toys but still would much rather go through my handbag given a choice....

My 3 yr old girl is exactly the same (she is the middle one - I have a 4 year old and a 6 month old). She never just plays, I was wondering if I was doing something wrong! everything my 4 year old gets out, the 3 year old wants to play with it, and then the arguments start.. she has just started preschool so Im hoping that will help.

My eldest was like that - it is sooooooooooo draining, it started to improve when she was about 6 - sorry!!!!!!! Involve her with cooking, laying the table etc so she is doing stuff alongside you.

Will do, but her attention span is a matter of seconds and then the tantrum starts because she wants to do things her way, for example throwing food on to the floor, rubbing her bogies into the food, all lovely things..

Sarra - My eldest never had tantrums - was speaking pretty fluently from the age of 16 months, had amazing logic capacity so I can't really help with ideas for you my dd just wanted to be with people and 100% involved. My next 3 dds were far more typical and I can remember being so amazed that they sat and played with toys when they were babies, with my eldest I couldn't stand being at home with her for more than an hour or so because she was quite hard work!

She's fine! 2 of my children don't play with toys at all. My eldest son is into computers and gaming, art and reading and music. Dd is into drawing, sewing, making things, reading, writing stories.
Only my youngest is into toys!
