Anyone else using the holidays to master new skills with your DC?

Am shattered - teaching a child to ride a bike is hard work!!!

We are getting there, but it is a killer on my back I can tell you!

But Dd managed much further on her own then ever before. Will go back out tomorrow too and have another go.

She is now fine on the flat and downhill, but once we hit an incline her little legs don't cycle fast enough to keep her upright fully - so she ends up having to stop.

She seems so much more confident now than she did at the start of the week though - when she couldn't do it at all TBH. And much more determined - she found out 2 of her friends at school can cycles their bikes so she is even more keen to master it

We also need to master setting off on her own too. She has managed that just twice on her own - both times today. So again, I guess something that will come.

Lets hope it is soon - my back can't take much more!

Ah, well done to her - all counts You'll be shattered for different reasons then - chasing after her to make sure she keeps out of bother, lol!

We are perfecting our 'lying horizontally doing bugger all' technique at maidamess towers.

Pogo stick. DD had thought about buying one with her birthday money and after a couple of rainy days, off we went to ASDA... DH wet blanket frowned on her learning in the living room but I think its great indoor exercise. Can fall over onto sofas.

cluttercup · 30/05/2008 16:40

We are practicing climbing trees and riding a trike one handed as ds has plaster cast on the other. Very independent my 3 year old!

Thomcat · 30/05/2008 16:43

You're so right Hula! She keeps crawling right up to things like the sofa and then crying becasue she doesn't know what to do next! Or crawling over to all the building bricks DD1 is playing with and colapsing onto them and crying! Very cute but very tiring.

And well done to your DD. Learnign to ride a bike is a magical, special time. Sadly will never experience this with DD1 but can't wait till DD2 and 3 are able to. The freedom and independence of bike riding is a wonderful thing. I loved my bike when I was young.

DD got a pog stick for her birthday. We have given up on mastering that for now!!!

will be using summer hols from nursery to get rid of night time nappies. any tips?

misdee · 30/05/2008 20:54

dd1+2 learnt to their ride their bikes over the may bank holiday. dd1 didnt like me pushing her so scootered about on her bike, then started peddling. dd2 likes a pushstart, but still cant get going herself.

am trying to see if we can fit the bikes in the car to take on holiday with us, but think we wont be able to.

flack · 30/05/2008 20:54

Skipping rope, here.

Heated · 30/05/2008 20:55

Buttons and zips this summer holidays in prep for starting school.

Bum wiping in hand so to speak

littlerach · 30/05/2008 20:55

Both dds have been trying to master a skateboard that my 17 year old step brother gave them.
Never gonna happen

Dh and I are mastering the aRT of shreiking "left, right, NOOOOO" as they veer across the garden.

Dd2 is now sticking to her stomcah only.

Hulababy · 31/05/2008 09:13

DD loves her skipping rope. They skip all the time in the playground. She has goteen ever so good - forward, back, criss cross, etc.

weeamoomoo - good luck. How old is your DC? FWIW there isnt a huge amount you can do unless they are ready. DD only just been consistently dry over last few months despite being dry during the day from 24 months.
