14 Month Old Development Delay?

Hi all! Just wanted to hear some other people’s stories on this. I have a 14 month old beautiful boy but he seems a bit behind on some development. He was only 8 days early born so not premature. I’m not too worried about the physical side of things as he’s starting to pull up to stand on everything so o think walking is on the cards very soon.

its more the communication side of things. He refuses to clap, he has waved a couple of times but nothing consistent and he doesn’t point. He doesn’t babble much if at all tbh he can make the odd little ‘gaga’ sound but it’s few and far between. He kind of does a gargling sound more than anything!

but he gives great eye contact, responds to his name and is always wanting some kind of attention, e.g will go to climb the stairs and if I say ‘oi’ he laughs and always seeks me out in places. He loves a shape sorter and stacking things he plays well with toys and loves pressing buttons. Im not sure if this is a full developmental delay or something he may catch up on at some point, but I would love to hear if you have stories similar! Thank you!

Has he had his 12 month check yet @SLS1994and how did he score in the communication section?

He had it when he was 10 months old and she wasn’t worried at all and said babies do things in their own time and he’s very playful and happy so she said he’s thriving but that was 4 months ago

So do you think from the comment “babies do things in their own time” that maybe he was scoring in the grey in communication?

How does he score on this 12 month progress checker?

So after doing that, he does have a lot of understanding tbh. He does put his arms up for me, looks at voices and smiles and laughs at me and interacts he just doesn’t babble much and he will look where I point etc so he needs some support in social communication. I work alongside SALT as part of my job so I’ll ask them for some advice and get him hopefully referred for some SALT 🥰 thank you

So if he does need some support asking for a referral to SaLT does sound like a very positive step.

The SaLT will probably want him to have a hearing test too so I’d ask your HV for a referral for one.

Before you do speak to your HV though, it’s worth filling in and scoring both the 14 month Ages & Stages and the 12 month Social & Emotional Ages and Stages and discussing the results with her.

He’s 19 months old now and we have an appointment with audiology as that’s the first protocol with speech delay. I mean his hearing is absolutely fine he can hear no issues at all ahha.

He responds to his name really well and he’s understanding instructions. He literally has only babbled dada and yeah yeah in the last week but I can see the progress! He still doesn’t clap or wave without a physical prompt but tbh I’m not worried anymore. He’s progressing in so mane ways he’s just taking his time, I’ve looked into an expressive communication delay and honestly he ticks all those boxes tbh, he just wants to do everything in his own time 🥰
