10 month old refusing water and pushing it away

For coming up to two weeks now, my 10.5 month old has been refusing water apart from the smallest of sips and I feel like I need some help and advice now. Because it is making his poos hard and difficult to pass and it’s upsetting him.

He’s been able to use a weighted straw cup since about 7 months old. A lot of it would be spat out but obviously he’d be taking a lot in now.

For some reason he is now pushing away his water. We have tried the straw cup, open cup, sippy cup, literally all sorts but he’s just pushing them away. Last night he was getting very upset trying to pass a stool so I was spoon feeding him some water out of desperation.

His wet nappies are fine and of course we’re giving him lots of fruit and veggies.

Has anyone encountered sudden water refusing / pushing away at this age?

Is he drinking milk ok?

At that age, water was just a top up my son had with meals as an option, it wasn't his main drink.

For constipation, I found that a couple of prunes had the desired effect within about 6h (recommend first thing otherwise they poo in the night!).

Which milk is he on and how much does he have @Playgo?

Morning both 😊

He’s still breastfed so he has it on demand. He’s feeding fine and having lots of wet nappies.

But he’s straining to pass his poos ever since he’s been pushing away his water. It’s been coming up for two weeks now. He is still producing poos thankfully but they are firm!

We are giving him a variety of fruit which is helping him to go regularly, thankfully. But it’s sore for him to pass them. When he was taking more water in, they were softer. We had some limited success yesterday with a Tommee Tippee free flow cup (the one with the spout), but he didn’t have anywhere near enough, and he is just pushing away his beloved straw bottle.

If he’s BF in demand I honestly wouldn’t worry at all. Your BM will keep him more than hydrated.

He is hydrated but he is having pebble poos that are like plasticine. They’re hurting him to push out. When he was drinking water, they were softer. He’s simply pushing away all water bottles and we’re at our wits’ end!

Can you add in some water rich foods like broccoli, jelly, berries, melon or soup?

Could it be the taste of the water?

Get some bottled water just to see. If it is, then a purifier is the solution.

Tap water if you're the south is not the best tasting due to calcium, chlorine, etc.

I would never have thought of this as ours is lovely Smile

Could the taste come from the cup though?

I used one of those "spill free" rubber top ones, and I was pinching some of his water the other day, and I must admit it tastes rank. Took me right back to primary school with every water bottle tasting the same! That, or my mum used Milton steriliser which always left a rank aftertaste.

Milton I’d a bit if a blast from the past Grin
