Violent behaviour 5 year old CAMHS

My son has been struggling for the last couple of years with violent behaviour in preschool and reception. He lashes out when someone says something he disagrees with, or does something he does like, or is in his way. I've had lots of calls from the school about it. It's not just pushing and shoving, it's kicking in the face, strangling, hitting on the head with heavy objects, pushing off climbing frame etc (sounds awful written out).

He's above average learning wise, (reading, talking, comprehension etc), and no trouble at all at home, sleeps well. It's being around other kids he struggles with.

He had an initial assessment for Autism/ADHD last year referred to by Preschool, but because we weren't having any trouble with him at home or with sleep etc they said they were happy to discharge him and said it was in the spectrum of normal 4 year old behaviour (we were happy with this as didn't feel he had many of the signs of Autism and hoping he'd grow out of the behaviours).

School is now referring him again for Autism assessment.

It feels a bit like the options are he either gets diagnosed/has Autism or there's nothing they can do to help, if that makes sense? Surely there are other routes for support?

Maybe he's not Autistic but has other issues, anger issues, or something else psychologically?

Has anyone had any success with support for similar issues?

Where would be a good place to go to for this, I've heard CAMHS mentioned?

Thanks

@FreesiaFairycan you tell us a bit more about who did the initial assessment last year?

Also, what are school doing to help him? Has he had a referral to an OT? Has their SENCO spoken to you and have they sought the advice of their Area SENCO?

Are they doing anything like Zones of Regulation with him and have you applied for an ECHP yet?

Has he had a hearing test too and how does he score on this simple progress checker?

Hi,

Yes it was the LA community paediatrics that did the initial assessment last year.

Had lots of meeting with school SENCO they've been great, they do sessions with him and have mentioned the zones of regulation thing (need to look into what that actually is - thanks for the link!) They've referred (or are in process of) referring him to LA for Autism assessment, and OT.

Had a private SALT assessment recently (scored highly on the speech and language sections) it's social communication he struggles with and she strongly suggested autism assessment (she thinks he is Autistic).

Also did private OT assessment last week and waiting for the report to be written!

All of that sounds very positive. I would suggest going over to the SN Children Section and seeing if anyone in there can suggest anything more and also advise on getting an ECHP Flowers
